100 Books to Read in a Lifetime

This popped into my emails today from Amazon and it seemed worth spending some time perusing it. 

I was surprised to find I have read more of these books than I thought I would have read before I checked out the list.  I couple of them I started and put down.  I like the fact that they have categorized the books by genre and given some idea of what they are about.

I will definitely mark this page for future reference if I ever get to the bottom of my TBR pile. lol

Over the years, I have read all but 9.  In a few cases, I saw the movie, rather than read the book.  These list are very subjective, as the comments indicate.  Nobody is going to agree on the 100 best books.  In the past, I researched a number of sources of best books, and tried to complete their  listings.  This list contains most of the popular ones or classics that most people would include.

I received the email from Amazon too. I thought it a good list. I was also surprised by how many I had read.There are lot's left that I haven't read as well.
I have read 36 of them. I did notice a couple that I had started and stopped.
I find lists like this helpful in making future reading choices sometimes theres are books that I've meant to read but had forgotten.
With Bookoholics around it's hard to imagine not finding good books to read still it can't hurt to keep the list around.

Actually saw your email before I noticed the one directly from Amazon.  Alas I have only read 24 of the books, plus one movie I saw, but hadn't read the book.  The list was full of books that I have always meant to read, but haven't.  But then again there were a few books listed that made me scratch my head.  For example, Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking, which was published the year after my husband died and dealt with her husband's death.  Now I know that everyone processes grief differently, but that book made me want to......  Well, let's just say I found it annoying.

I did like the fact that there were both classics and modern books on the list, even if Louise Penny, my favorite author, wasn't there.

How about you?  Were there any books that surprised you, either by being there, or being excluded???

A quick count includes at least 74 of these books have been made into movies (theater and TV) so it's kind of hard not to have experienced the stories if you watch any of these media.
