The first thing I did after being approved was to come here to join the group.

What am I reading? "A New Age Now Begins" by Page Smith (2 Volumes)

It's an old history of the American Revolution (1976) - The style of writing and material is lauding and praising of America; historical writing has changed since Smith but I like all the events and the way he sets up his scholarship. It's also part of his history of America series that goes up through WWII and a little past,

Sounds very interesting and putting him on my list - never liked history until I took a college course in it and was lucky to have a great instructor.  Became interested and like to read about it now.  The Civil War is my favorite history but like it all now.  Thanks with all the snow and freezing cold I need all the books I can get.  LOL

The Civil War is my favorite too. I have specialized in it to the point of having to learn the parlance of military rank and file as well as the general geography of war plans as well as individual battles. Most Civil War histories are complicated until one learns those things because in order to follow the writing of any scheme of strategy or battle, the keys are understanding movement of troops. The best general history of the war I ever read was James McPherson's "Battle Cry of Freedom". He does not bog the reader down with battle details although it is good to have Craig Symonds's short work handy while reading him(the title escapes me). I am guessing you have read it so I won't belabor. When it comes to individual battle I recommend Allen Guelzo's "Gettysburg the Last Invasion". Coddington seems to have written the standard work on Gettysburg but I have not read it yet.

Thanks believe me I have not read everything on the Civil War but am always glad to get info on it.  I find it fascinating and my husband was born and raised in Appomattox , Va. so has had a little to do with it.  Thanks so much .

I know this is an old post but I didn't see it till now and I just wanted to say hello and welcome.  I was from eons too.  I sure miss that website.  But I do have to say that this one is a lot of fun too.
