it's a spice or herb or something that people in India eat for good digestion, but it also has healing properties in folk medicine for colds, bronchitis, croup.  I think they wore it in a bag or something on their chest.  Heard of it all my life but didn't know it was digestible til I looked it up on Wikipedia.
