Call it finger-lickin' stupid.

We were astonished when we heard the comments that state Sen. Vicki Marble, R-Fort Collins, made Wednesday during a legislative hearing on poverty. Marble decided to share her thoughts on nutrition.

"When you look at life expectancy, there are problems in the black race," Marble said. "Sickle-cell anemia is something that comes up. Diabetes is something that's prevalent in the genetic makeup, and you just can't help it.

"Although I've got to say, I've never had better barbecue and better chicken and ate better in my life than when you go down South and you, I mean, I love it. Everybody loves it."

Marble went on to say how Mexicans eat healthy until they come to the United States.

The comments stunned other lawmakers on the Economic Opportunity Poverty Reduction Task Force, including state Rep. Rhonda Fields, D-Aurora, who is African-American.

"I will not engage in a dialogue where you are using these stereotypical references about African-Americans and chicken and food," Fields said to Marble. "I will not tolerate that. This is not what this committee is all about. ... What we are trying to do is come up with meaningful solutions. This is not about eating chicken."

Possibly making things worse, Marble later issued a statement that, instead of saying she was sorry, proclaimed she was "saddened" her words were taken as offensive.

We are saddened a state lawmaker can be this ignorant in 2013.

Retarded people don't offend me, it's not their fault.

but you sure as hell don't vote them into office....

Es verdad!

There are some people in this world who just don't have a clue. They're stuck on stupid most of their lives.

the very same people that think all them darkies spend their time dancing, eating fried chicken and watermelon, and spend their off times at the welfare office or if they're young go out to rob and steal......just like all them wops eat spaghetti and are members of the mafia....and all the irish are drunks and......but simple rules for simple minds..

It is call, stereotype, and it has been with us for a long, long time, just as their are the members of our tribe and then there are the others; who need to be dealt with as a matter of fear and suspicion, if not loathing.

Today there are ongoing commemorations of the March of Washington for Jobs and Freedom which happened 50 years ago.  It was only after that March AND the assassination of a president that the laws sought by that march was passed, signed and put into effect.

As to the progress over the last 50 years, it has been monumental, and yet, the dream that Dr. King spoke about still lays ahead of us, or, lays ahead for generations yet to follow.  Generations, that don't have the memory, the experience and participation of living in those times covered in the last 50 years of progress and struggle.  It maybe, that only when the generation that came through those times leave, can we really know if the dream is here, and alive.
