TBD on Ning

Now that August is here, are you finding any cool spots to curl up with a good book?  Will be 103 here tomorrow!

I'm about 2/3 finished with THE NEVER LIST by Koethi Zan.  The story is very timely as it deals with some girls held captive for three years in a dungeon-like cellar by a connoisseur of sadism. Sound familiar?

I mentioned in another post that I have just finished reading 2 of the Jo Nesbo books, The Snowman and The Leopard.  Both books, though wonderfully written and plotted, were very dark and I needed a totally different change of pace....so I'm reading a bit of non-fiction, Bart Ehrman's Did Jesus Exist?  Definitely a change of pace from this former Christian, now agnostic college professor....oh, in case you were worried, the answer is yes.

I am reading three books:

The Apostle by John Pollack (life of the apostle Paul) book also includes The Master (Jesus) which I finished reading.

The Ultimate Weight Loss Solution by Dr. Phil McGraw

In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson (one year in the life of an American family living in Hitler's Berlin) Note: Larson wrote The Devil in the White City)

One more book I am reading:

Fanny J. Crosby, An Autobiography

The life of a  beloved hymn writer told in her own words.

Her hymns include:

Blessed Assurance; Jesus is Tenderly Calling You Home; Praise Him, Praise Him; To God be the Glory;  Pass Me Not, Oh Gentle Saviour; Resdue the Perishing;  and Tell Me the Story of Jesus

Have finished THE NEVER LIST by Koethi Zan. Found it too similar to the actual event of girl's being held captive in Cleveland recently. This book was conceptualized to the extreme.

Then finished THE GHOSTS OF MANHATTAN by Douglas Brunt.  It's a novel about the frenetic life and work of the Wall Street traders. The excessive bonuses, wining, dining of clients.....things of which my naivete had not considered. Fast moving and held my attention.

Last night started THE CUCKOO'S CALLING by Robert Galbraith, which is a pseudonym for J.K Rowling. This is a crime novel introducing PI Cormoran Strike who investigates a supermodel's suicide.  Read into the wee hours.  This one is hard to put down!!!

;) The book is hard to put down as for the first time since I can remember it's the only book currently in my stack to read!  Have at least 8 more on reserve.  The next one that will probably come in is THE SON.  Looking forward to that one!

I'm enjoying JERUSALAM GAP at the gym on my iPad. At home I still prefer hard bound books!

Just finished Massacre Pond by Paul Doiron.  This is the latest in the Mike Bowditch series and I enjoyed it very much.  This series reminds me so much of Joe Pickett. Mike is a game warden in Maine, is younger than Joe and is single so there's an occasional romantic angle to the books.

My next in line is the Cellist of Sarajevo.

Just finished up the "good twin, bad  twin" Scottoline mystery that is full of action and angst.  I am now reading two forensic tales that take place in Eastern Tennessee.  "Flesh and Bone" and "Carved in Bone" come out of the Body Farm or anthropology lab of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where forensic scientists are researching crimes.  Good stuff if you like a new twist on the forensic genre of murder mysteries.  http://www.amazon.com/Flesh-Bone-Body-Farm-Novel/dp/0060759836

I've read the whole Body Farm series so far and highly recommend them.

Gone Girl...I'm about 1/3 the way through on AudioBook....still trying to grasp how this is #1 on Best-seller list? What am I missing? Usually printed books translate well into Audio as long as not too many characters, flashbacks, etc. the thing is just dragging on and on.~ grumpy~mellowgal

It was not better to read it.  Long drawn out story and not so hot plot and ends like you think it will.  Sorry my opinion only - I do not understand it being on any list.

Part of the fun of this group is how differently we react to books.  I spent the first half of the book vacillating between did he or didn't he??  (Don't want to spoil this for anyone who hasn't read it yet.), and the second half getting annoyed....I didn't see the ending coming, and all I can say is, I won't be going to see the movie.

I quit on this book about a third of the way in.
