I love a good series!  You can get lost in one book after the other for days or months at a time.

List your favorite series, it's main character, the author, the genre, and the name of the first book in this series....

I'll start with my 'very' favorite:  the Cork O'Conner series by William Kent Krueger...

Genre: highly moral, family based outdoor mysteries (does that make sense?)

First book in series: Iron Lake  (be sure to start at the beginning)

I would be very interested to know how you find it. Most of the pleasure is the internal dialog and the mood of someone trying to do right amid a system that fights him every step of the way. It has a very human quality to it.

I've actually read the first 2 books in the series, Gorky Park and Polar Star.    The 8th book, Titania, won't be published until November, so we have time to catch up with the adventures of Arkady Renko.

Another notable series, I have not read it but it is on my TBR

The Hangmans series by the German author Oliver Pötzsch

The first book is The Hangman's Daughter which is a murder mystery in 1660, it depicts the life and times and politics of that period and that profession. The book got 1700 review on Amazon but it is not to everyone's taste.

It is however available today for only $1 so may be worth a try

I'm less of a James Patterson fan than I used to be but I still like his Women's Murder Club series (most are written with Maxine Paetro, one of his better co-authors; a few of them with Andrew Gross who has gone on to be a great author on his own).  The first of the series is "1st to Die".

I have read just about each of the Kate Scarpetta forensic series that started in 1990.   Patricia Cornwell still trots out her host of flawed characters but I have begun to lose interest as she seems to be stretching them out a bit much of late.  http://www.amazon.com/Patricia-Cornwells-Kay-Scarpetta-order/lm/1GC...

I am a very compulsive reader and when I get started in a series, I have to keep going until I am completely caught up.  The series that I most recently got caught up on is Lindsey Davis's series on 1st C. CE Rome, featuring informer(detective), Marcus Didius Falco.  Taking place all over the Roman Empire at the time, the voice is casual and in the first person.  Falco is a former soldier from a disgraced regiment.  He is one of those lovable scamps that you sometimes would like to smack, but he does have a heart of gold.  He sticks with people long past the time when most would have completely given up.  The Emperor Vespasian sends Falco on missions with little support and less reward.  There is a long-suffering tone sometimes, but with humor. There are 20 books in this series and the author has no plans to continue with this character, but she has published one more in a projected series featuring another of Falco's family members.  I have read it, too, and I guess I will have to wait until next year for the second one.  I'm looking forward to it.  I usually prefer to read a series in order, but reading these books out of order will not spoil your reading experience.

Now that sounds interesting Baia. That would be a complete change of pace for me. I've read lots of detective series but never one set in early Rome...  Spartacus is one of my all time favorite movies... will have to give it a try...  thanks for the recommendation :)

To go back a few years, I would suggest the Travis McGee series by John D. MacDonald, the first of which was The Deep Blue Good-by. I have read several of the books, but not all.  They were really quite good.

One last post on this discussion by me...

I can't believe we forgot our favorite canine series...  Chet & Bernie.

Starting with Dog On It, the best dog mystery ever is written by Spencer Quinn.

If you have a dog, it's a must... if you don't have a dog, you may want to get one after reading this wonderful series.
