Bagels or kolaches?

I don't know these kolaches of which you speak. Tell me about them.   ☺

I think it's Polish onions...or shoes.

Kolaches are a pastry, usually with a fruit filling. I think they originally were a Polish or Czech recipe. Ask Aggie!!!! He is a kolache expert.

I grew up in an all Polish town and it sounds mighty familiar.i know pierogies and kielbasa.

We eat kielbasa on a pretty regular basis, but I haven't had pierogies for a while. I don't think it's traditional, but I like mine fried. I haven't had any kolache since I moved from Mineral Ridge OH. about 5 years ago. There is a large Polish/Czech population in nearby Youngstown, and you can find kolaches everywhere. (some of the best ones are at church bazaars)

yea,the church bazaar (or carnival)starts at the end of July. good eatin'

Let's put it this way: Hot Pockets are the horrible, mass-produced, mutant versions of the deliciousness that is a fresh, hand-made pierogi. (My favorites are the sauteed onions, egg and cheese, but stuffed with seasoned mashed potatoes are A-OK, too.) If I recall correctly - Pierogis, like bagels, are first boiled and then baked. Fried is also acceptable.  A little sour cream on the side, and you're set.

You can get frozen pierogis in a lot of grocery store freezer sections, but they don't hold a candle to the kind made by little old ladies and sold in church basements - No comparison. Just like baklava, chocolate-chip cookies or croissants, when they're made by somebody who loves what they're doing, it always produces better results.

Snagg, you hit the nail right between the eyes. one thing I noticed, like myself, a lot folks round these parts smother them in ketchup.

as for hot pockets, they just burn my mouth inside, then I can't taste anything.

i'll be stuffing my face next week.
