TBD

TBD on Ning

I'm anticipating some good reads this month and have 13 titles on reserve.  Monday I'll pick up THE STORYTELLER by Jodi Picoult and BENEDICTION by Kent Haruf.  Perhaps you have read some of Haruf's beloved tales such as his PLAINSONG  and EVENTIDE which take place in the plains of Colorado.  I'm thrilled that he's released a new book!

Am reluctantly finishing A WEEK IN WINTER tonight.  Fabulous read!  Binchy at her best!

I loved A Week in Winter, too.  I've liked all her books and will miss her writing.

I'm starting off the month with Louise Penny, "Still Life."  Anyone who likes a different flavor in their detective stories will enjoy her books, all placed in Quebec, where Chief Inspector Gamache and his crew of detectives investigate murders.  It is full of culture, as this novel takes you to the Eastern Townships, along the US border, where heritage that has existed since the Revolutionary War, has former British loyalists and French Canadians living side by side in a unique French/English culture.

I read "The Beautiful Mystery" last month that took place at a remote abbey where monks keep alive traditions that were carried over from Europe, as they live in their own private sanctuary from the real world.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louise_Penny

I just finished your recommended book and I loved it - will read more of her books for sure.  Thanks so much Mandy Muffin.

Just finished Watching the Dark, the latest in Peter Robinson's Inspector Alan Banks British mystery series; very good.

I've been reading The Kashmir Shawl for several days now and I have to say I am having trouble keeping interested in it.  When the most exciting thing in the first 100 pages is a snow storm it lacks something for me.  The characters don't hold my interest and I really don't seem to care where the shawl came from or who the lock of hair belonged to...

Some encouragement that the story gets more interesting to continue would be appreciated...  lol

Have to admit that it took me over 1/3 through the book until I got involved.  I think the shawl and lock of hair are fairly incidental to the human interactions after she leaves the outer mission field. I gave it an 84 on The Slopok scale.

Thanks, rapa...  I think I'm ready to move on to other adventures for now... so many books, so little time...  :)

Started Mind's Eye, by Hakan Nesser (a Swedish author), the 1st in a inspector Van Veeteren 3 book series. Going up to Vermont to visit my son and his family and to try my hand at "sugaring" (making maple syrup), so it's nice to have 5 books on my Kindle in case of travel delays.

I envy you getting to make maple syrup. I am sure you will also enjoy visiting with your family. We are heading to Dallas tomorrow. For a daughter getting re- married. I get to babysit the grands. I have a few books to take with me, both the e kind and dead tree kind.

I just started Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen by Susan Gregg Gilmore.  So far it is a light, charming, Fanny Flagg kind of book...  I'll complete the review later this week...  :)

I don't remember where I got this book suggestion.  Has any one else read this?

Carci, I think several of us have read that. It's set in the small town of Ringgold GA which is just across the GA line from Chattanooga (where I live). I really enjoyed it & agree that it has Fannie Flagg tones to it.

Slopok, you sure don't want to get snowed in up in the great northeast in winter with nothing to read! Can't say that I've ever had fresh maple syrup - will there be pancakes too?

I'm deep in Eve & Roarke world with Calculated In Death. Love these books. This time she's caught up in world of accounting & high finance - not her favorite area!!
