I have a problem with my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, which is neither a Mac nor a PC so hope this is okay to post here.  (I tried checking various online forums--including Samsung's own which was the least helpful!--but didn't get much help.)

The Tab, which is only 14 months old, is getting harder and harder to turn on and is having frequent screen freezes; this started happening right after I updated the Tab's android system. About all I got from the forums is either time to buy a new one or try to do a "back up and reset"; I'm reluctant to do the back-up-and-reset since I was warned that will remove all downloaded apps and all the ebooks in the Kindle app on the Tab.  My 1st thought was "Okay, having to redownload all those apps & ebooks would be a real PITA but it's better than having to buy a new Tab."  But then I think about all the ebooks I have in the Kindle app & I know that Amazon keeps them in my account but will I have to pay all over again to re-download them after resetting the Tab (or buying a new one)?  Contacting Amazon is no help; every time I've tried to email them with a problem, all I get back is "We'll be glad to help you if you'll call us at the following #."

Thanks for any help.

for all the stuff you have downloaded from amazon, you have an account there...your very own amazon cloud and it has any apps and e-books etc that you have downloaded from amazon. you can download them again and as many times as you want to any device you want. you own them and there is no charge to grab them again

Thanks, guys that's good to know.  If I do have to buy a new tablet, Kooner, by "better & more trusted tech", you mean the iPad?  Becuz if I do have to get a new tablet, I'd like to get 1 that lasts a little longer than 14 months so if I'd be better off with the iPad, that's what I'll get.

ripley....

The Galaxy Tab should not be having the problems you're explaining because it ain't that old.  Unfortunately, it's probably out of warranty, which sucks.

If you were to gat another tablet, I'd opt for the iPad, but there's something you need to remember.  All those Kindle apps and all those Amazon ebooks do not port well over to the operating system that supports the iPad.  The iPad uses iOS6, while the Galaxy uses a version of Android. Two distinct and separate operating ecosystems that do not talk to each other.

Before taking the plunge, I'd suggest stopping at an Apple brick & mortar store and ask one of the folks there is there's a way to move all your Amazon account stuff over to iTunes.  You might as well know going in whether you'll have problems or not.

Here's a link to how to reset your Galaxy Tab to factory specs:  http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-reset-the-samsung-gala...

You can find more info by googling "how to reset a Galaxy Tab"  or going to youtube and entering the same argument string.

If you decide on replacing your kindle with an iPad, there is a kindle app on the iPad which gives you access to all the books that you have bought for kindle. But apps is a different story, none of them will be available and you will need to buy them again this time from the Apple iTunes store.

If you replace your kindle with a kindle tab such as the kindle Fire HD all your books and apps will be available without charge. The kindle fire comes in 7'' for $200 and 8.9'' for $300

I have both an iPad and a 7'' kindle Fire HD I much prefer the later because it is lighter and I can hold it for long periods of time

thanks, lip!

I didn't know there was a Kindle reader app on the iPad.

@ripley - you might want to look at the new iPad Mini.  It's smaller and easier to hold than the full size.  It starts at $329, I think. I have vision issues, and I need more real estate than the Kindle Fire can give.

Thanks, everyone; I'm going to try Samsung's support next for help--hope their people are more helpful than Amazon's; you know, Amazon makes enough $$, you'd think they could afford decent support staff, sheez.  If that doesn't work, I may just go ahead with the iPad.

An update:  I found out that no prob with redownloading the Kindle books for no charge; so I went ahead and did the factory reset of the Tab--took forever to redownload everything I had on there--but here's hoping it'll work; we'll see...stay tuned...

Oh, yeah, it's cool the way the Kindle can be used on the pc's too; I also like the fact that amazon will warn you if you start to download a kindle book that you already have in your kindle library and just forgot  becuz you deleted it a few pages in becuz you didn't like it (which I've done more than once, lol).

An update:  the factory reset of the Tab went well, seems to have cleared up the problems and I was able to re-download for free all the kindle books that were on it.

And a tip for any other android device users:  I also was able to use a "hack" (courtesy of good ol' cnet.com) to get FlashPlayer back on the Tab & can now play games again on my favorite game sites.  (The FlashPlayer app disappeared  after the update & Adobe wouldn't let me download it for the Tab, said it was no longer compatible with android; but I was warned by the saleskid when I bought it that visiting sites that use Flash might be problematic in light of the Flash vs. HTML5 stuff going on so it wasn't a big shock and this hack may not last.  Glad I got it back tho!)

Glad to hear your reset went well. I've had a Galaxy Tab 10.1 for about the same time as you have and haven't encountered any issues but if I do, I'll check back here. I got the Galaxy Note 10.1 too (as a Christmas present) and love it. It has 16G and I put in another 32 with the sd card (which was on sale). Thanks also for the info on the Flash Player, I'm having the same issue with not being able to get it on the new Galaxy Note. I use Chrome as my main browser on both but most game sites seem to come up if I use the built in browser.

I know people go on and on about iPads and all things Apple, but that's not me. I have the Galaxy S 3 phone, too, and my TV is a Samsung HD with 3D. I happen to love Samsung and don't believe that paying more always gets you more. I've had very good luck with them and spent a lot less than what I could have. Just my opinion.
