So,it has been almost 600 years ago since Pope Gregory XII resigned as a way to resolve the crisis of multiple claimants to the papacy, that now Pope Benedict XVI has given his resignation of the papacy due to poor health.

This also means that the Rome Catholic Church is put into a moment of great challenges and concerns as to the past and future of what leadership the church had and will have to lead it into the middle of this century. One advantage of the resignation is for the church to make a clear break in the ongoing history of sexual abuse in the church that was recognized, but not dealt with forcefully and in concert with the law if not morals and ethics of the situation. The second is that the church can seek to reform in light of the demands of changes in society and lifestyles of church members and the clergy. The third is making the teachings and dogmas of the church impact on the live of members and relate to other denominations and religions that have very different beliefs and aspirations.

The next leader could be much different that the popes of the past in that the college of cardinals is different after a long process of selection has provided a much boarder and geographically dispersed leadership into play. The question is will there be a leader pope or a place keeper that leaves the church leadership time to consider and decide what the church can and will do in the future, its future and that of the world.

Interesting...

I wonder how this will play out..

Will he be the last Pope...?

As a non-Catholic, I could never understand the role of the pope.

The Papacy has always fascinated me, although I also am a non-Catholic.  On one hand I have seen some inspirational moral and ethical leadership.  On the other hand, there have been many instances where the pope should have taken stronger action to address the evils we see throughout the world,  the most recent being the many revelations of pedophilia in the priesthood.

this particular pope was in fact in charge of the office that was overseeing the pedophilia scandals ....

http://news.yahoo.com/popes-mission-revive-faith-clouded-scandal-13...

"Documents revealed that the Vatican knew well of the problem yet turned a blind eye for decades, at times rebuffing bishops who tried to do the right thing.

Benedict had firsthand knowledge of the scope of the problem since his old office, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith which he had headed since 1982, was responsible for dealing with abuse cases."

that being said ....this is nothing more than drama...all that will happen is a convening of the cardinals and a series of votes til they reach a decision as to who next becomes the pope...simple internal religious politics

and woody...the pope is supposed to be infallible...but i pretty much think that concept has been left behind even by catholics....so just picture the pope as the head of the church...not all that much different in concept than say oral roberts or billy graham as head of their ministries....

Thanks PA. I have many friends who were born into catholic familes, but like myself...who was born into a baptist family....they seem to have given up on religion and the pope. I've pretty much given up on religion too...lol. It seems like many baby boomers who were raised up in a particular religion, don't belong to any particular religion today. Many still believe in god, myself included, but see religion (like politics) as a way of dividing people. I left the baptist church because of the hypocrites....lol. I tried  other religions and found hypocrites there also. So now I tell people I'm a spiritual.

geee i found this as a commentary on a news story about the tornado in hattiesburg mississippi..doesn't this just warm the cockles of your heart?..

That is inherantly homosexual!!!!!!!!!!! IF YOU LIKE THINGS IN YOUR BUTT GOD CANNOT SAVE YOU!!!! FIND THE LORD, lest you will burn in the darkest depths of hell!!! Wonder what Hell's Angels will think of this?????...........lol.

too bad we don't have pastor dan's home address so he could explain the error of their ways to them...

Pastor Dan? Guide Me? Oh holy Sh*!.

That statement makes me realize how f ing stupid these religious right winger are.

I don't get the Pope thing either, it seems that religion hasn't evolved quite fast enough. Sorry if I've offended anyone but I really believe that with my whole heart.

makes you want to go fry up a mess of cockles don't it....and maybe pastor dan's nuts....

Christianity needs its religious screwballs, too.  We’ve got to keep up with those in the Middle East, don’t we.  Maybe the Islamic religious nuts and the Christian religious nuts can do each other in, and the rest of us can live happily ever after.

The problem is while they're doing each other in, they're doing in everyone else for miles around.
