Remember the video from a couple years ago of a girl falling into a shopping mall fountain because she was texting?

Well, it happened again...and once again was caught on a security camera.  But this time it happened in Birmingham, England to a woman named "Laura Safe" and she fell into an icy CANAL.  (--The high in Birmingham on the day it happened was only 27 degrees.)

Luckily, someone pulled her out, and she's okay.  She later admitted that she was texting her boyfriend.   She also happens to be a reporter for a radio station over there, and had a pretty good sense of humor about it when the morning show chatted with her about it.

I wonder how many times I've had to move aside while someone walking towards me is texting and would walk right into me if I didn't get out of the way??

Sorry, it takes a special kind of stupid to do that.  And we all know..you can't fix stupid....

We all hear about the dangers of texting while driving, but texting while walking can pose risks as well. At least in that case though you are not maneuvering hundreds of pounds of steel through potential obstacles. I do see this walking while texting a lot. I especially notice it in places that are really busy, like Vegas.

I saw a teenage couple walking down the street by my house the other day -- looked like 15 or 16 years old.  As they walked past my house, the girl was texting and didn't notice that her boyfriend turned down my driveway to cross the street -- she finally saw him and skipped a couple steps to catch up.  When they came back down the street, she was again texting and when he turned to cross the street, without looking up, she simply followed him out into traffic.  He stopped for the car that was going by, she almost got hit.  Stupid, stupid, stupid.  Maybe "Darwin" will weed this one out...before she breeds! LOL

But there are too too many of them Mike!!

YES, WE SURE ARE!

I have trouble texting when I'm sitting on my sofa.  Doing it driving or walking is just out of the question.  Steve, I used to be a NYer and would probably get mugged or worse wandering around Manhattan.  I'm too trusting after being here way too long.  I walk all over and don't think anything of it.  Of course, I worked for almost 20 years in the Baltimore city foreclosure market and never had a problem.

I don't know.  I've been here 24 years.  I was much younger and wilder when I arrived here.  Now I've mellowed out after realizing it was relatively safe.  People thought I was nuts when I started wandering around Baltimore city by myself.  I'm assuming you're family with Jamaica in Queens.  I went to high school there in the 60's.  That never bothered me either.  Never had a problem.

I hate texting. It seems to take the human to human communication out of the equation. I've called people and left a voice mail to call me back and the next thing I know I receive a text message. What's so hard about dialing a number and talking to a human voice? I have 2 nieces who live in the same house and might be in different rooms of the same house.....and they text each other. Under the same roof, in different rooms down the hall from each other and the are texting each other. What a load of crap. Too damn lazy to walk down the hall and talk to each other. Seems kinda stupid to me.....lol.

Steve -- the trend will continue until the "next thing" comes along. Remember, it wasn't so long ago that kids (and some of us adults, too) "chatted" on the computer using AIM, etc.? We (myself, my wife, and the "kids") would AIM to each other even if we were in the same house! Now it's texting and we don't even think about the old way of doing it.

I hope the next thing comes along soon -- texting is getting "old!" I resisted it for a long time, too. Now I'm a texter - not while driving, walking, or talking to other people, but I do find a quick text to often be the best way to communicate. However, I truly don't understand the constant texting that some kids do, 1000s every day! I have 200 per MONTH on my plan and I've never gone over!

The inane text discussions that go on must be like this....

WTFRU?
Home
Oh
U?
Home
K
LOL
No LOL 2 U!
Hah
yeah

Ok, I've run out of things to say!!!! I know people that will do that, I had a "conversation with another adult not so long ago that went like this...

Where are U?
Office
Lunch?
Sure
Where?
Rocky's?
K
When?
12:30?
K

Then at 12:30....

Where R U?
Coming
When
Now
I see U

What a freakin' waste of time!

The only real winners are the cell phone companies that figured out early on that they could charge for this -- and they must've known that people would quit using their phones to talk on, so they kept these ridiculous plans for texting, as if that takes up any bandwidth -- it's just a whole crap load of money that goes to the carriers for providing very little service.

It's even frustrating to me when folks use text abbreviations when they're posting in the different discussion groups - is it laziness or is it just that they're so used to doing it that they don't even think about it anymore??

Interesting Article in Dear Abby's column today in the Houston Chronicle about texting!

The first article, that is!!!
