There seems to be a alert out to disable java.

Now I have to figure out how to do that again. Maybe someone can let me and the rest of us know. We need to do it in each browser?

Willy - I went to www.java.com and they had nothing that would indicate an alert.

Do you mean javascript alerts?

Pete

Sorry I cannot clarify that Pete as I know nothing about java really. But there is a real risk to be hacked, it was even on the national TV news. Kim Komando sent a warning too, I would have to copy and past it here, little long and just in e-mail not a web page. Should I?

Willy -

I found out that there are some problems with Java 7, but the problems go all the way back to the middle of last year.  I just found this on the ZDnet website:  http://www.zdnet.com/homeland-security-warns-to-disable-java-amid-z...

This site also has a lot of info about Java:  http://javatester.org/version.html

If you choose to disable Java on your pc, you can find out how by googling "How to disable Java on a Windows computer" (without the quotes) and then read the top 4 or 5 results.  Usually, you can disable Java in your browser by going to it's Tools, or Preferences, or Internet Options, and then deselecting it.

It also wouldn't hurt to run Malwarebytes, just for giggles.

Here is a portion of Komando's alert.

A serious threat to your computer security! Take action now!

Oracle's infamous Java program is back in the news. Hackers found a serious security flaw that affects all versions of Java 7, even the latest update 10.

The exploit for this flaw is already available in two popular hacker tool kits, Blackhole (which I've already warned you is going to be a serious problem in 2013) and Nuclear Pack. That's bad news for you. Just visiting a malicious website will allow hackers to take over your computer!

How to disable

Also was reminded of a Dec java post everyone can go back to read, just a few pages back.

There is a new exploit using Java which is dangerous enough to want to merit disabling Java altogether from your machine. This one seems serious folks.

Here is a page that tells you how to do that in your browser

That's the one I keep warning about.

...is disabling the browser java add on/plug in the same as disabling javascript in tools/options/content tab in firefox?...
...must do both?...

It really is very confusing to me radar. I believe I heard something about not disabling javascript. I hope Pete will clarify it for us.

I am still clueless why a PC maker cannot put everything on a PC that is needed so users do not need to rely on all of the third party or whatever it might be called, software.

radar.....no, they're not the same.  Depending on your browser, you should have Select/Deselect buttons somewhere in the browser's option, features, tools, or preferences.

I use Safari at the moment, and in Preferences > Security is where I can enable or disable either or both Java and/or Javascript.

Pete

That's what I keep repeating lol. It has been on TV news for days. Homeland Security is Government.
