TBD on Ning

If you use Microsoft's Messenger, be prepared to use Skype as its replacement, or seek out a new Instant Messaging application soon.

Microsoft is pulling the plug on MSN Messenger on the Ides of March - 03/15/2013.

Here's an article about its demise:  http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/microsoft_shoot_messenger_mar...

SKype probably is better because it'll be maintained going forward.  Also, M'Soft spent a lot of bucks in buying Skype and hasn't done much about it since it was purchased.

Pete,

Wouldn't be the 1st time that MS spent big $$$$ on somthing, and it failed!

I did the switch a week or two ago, not by choice but knowing there will be no choice. I will not be using Skype though and am really ticked at MS. Messenger gave me notification of incoming Hotmail and I use Hotmail, now Outlook for notifications of TBD activity.

Oh, NO!

Are there any experienced Skype users here?

Is there anyway you can be tricked into using a pay part of the service?

What's the good and bad of it?

I've used Skype, once, to make a conference phone call, but I've never used the IM portion of it.

How about AOL Instant Messenger?  Isn't it still around and viable?

Pete

Oh yes Pete, AIM.com and yahoo messenger are good. I was just curious about Skype and how people like it or don't like it and if they can trick you into some pay feature that asks for funds after use. I am P----- because Windows Live Messenger is gone and cannot alert me of incoming mail.

MrMusic, how does that work? Contacts have your yahoo and hotmail address, and when those are forwarded to g-mail and you reply, your reply shows them mail is from g-mail, right? And does g-mail have a method of notification, sound?

Thanks MrMusic, but what I was meaning, doesn't it confuse people that send you mail at one of the other accounts and you reply with google? Why not have them all mail you at google?

I have about 10 e-mails lol........

AIM and Google talk are good alternatives to MS Messenger

Skype is excellent for making phone calls (and video conference calls) from your computer.

Once you learn to use Skype you will find it very useful.

Skype is even more essential on your smartphone because it allows you to make international calls without paying the exorbitant prices of those calls. (there is a small charge for these calls but it is in order of pennies per minutes, US carriers charge multiple dollars per minute)

You can also use a client which can handle multiple IM sources.

For example Pidgin can handle AIM and Google talk and a few more under one platform
