JANUARY READS
The holidays are now history so is everyone finding time to settle down with a good book?
I'm reading Ann Patchett's STATE OF WONDER and am finding it a page-turner. Nothing like a trip to the Amazon jungle to pique my interest. Also medical research intigue which fascinates me. Loved Patchett's BEL CANTO and this is just as good!
Douglas Preston's TWO GRAVES is enroute to library for me.

I decided that the cold of Winter was a good time to start a book I received for Christmas, The Hidden Reality by Brian Greene. It explores the idea of parallel universes and "the deep laws of the cosmos." (I hope everyone is properly impressed.)

I also read Wanted Man but got dizzy as they kept driving back and forth from Nebraska to Iowa and Missouri. I think "One Shot" was his best and I understand it is back on the top seller list as it is the basis for the new movie that is simpler called, "Reacher." I read it about a month ago, although it had been sitting on my shelf for awhile. Bell Canto was great but State of Wonder not so good.

First, lorouch, I'm very impressed. Heck, I read your description & I still don't know what you're reading about! Good for you - I guess.
It's funny, but a book mentioned by 2 of you, Bel Canto, is what I'm reading right now. A friend of mine in CA sent it to me because she loved it so much & thought I would too. I gotta admit - I'm struggling with it. I'm only 41 pgs into it but it's requiring effort. I'm not sure why - the story of all these important folks being held hostage in a S. Amer country should be more gripping. The story line with the opera star, and other lines..... Well, heck, I'll keep plugging on it - give me some hope y'all!

I looked over Amazon's discussion on peoples favorite books and went to the library and got "The Power of One" by Bryce Courtenay and the first three by Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. These are huge books, little print with way over 600 pages. I love a long book if I can get into it. A number of people recommended the series and "The Power of One", so I'm hopeful that I'll have something interesting to read for the next few weeks. Will let you all know how I like these.

After reading 2 free books on my Kindle by Catherine Ryan Hyde last month I decided to see if the library had any of her books. I loved Don't Let Me Go and Electric God on my Kindle. Now I have Walter's Purple Heart from the library.
I might get Pay It Forward next but I usually don't read a book after I've seen the movie... however I loved that movie and I love her style of writing so I might make an exception this time.
(and lorouch, I am definitely impressed... lol)

In another post I said for our book clubs for Jan. we are reading "Broken" and "The time travelers wife" Liked Broken, but the time travelers wife goes back and forth from when she was a child to older, Hard to keep up.

I also read "NYPD Red" by Patterson -- his usual fare of short choppy chapters with enough violence and sexual situations to satisfy. But for free, I pick up his books at the library. I have set up "Natural Selection" and "The Dirty Secrets Club" for books-on-discs to complement my 1,000 mile drive to my Florida winter home that I am making in the next couple of days. I usually limit my selection to those available for free at my community library in my Florida retirement community. I am also reading "Billy Bathgate" the Doctorow classic.
