Here is a great blog on books that features reviews and a list of 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die.  If you haven't run into it before, here it is:  http://agirlwalksintoabookstore.blogspot.com/

I ran off the list about a year ago.  It is amazing.

Great site. Thanks.

Looks like a great site; thanks!

Just scroll down the page until you get to the book cover that says "1001 Book You should read before you die."Then click on it and the listing will appear.  I ran it off for ease of reading.  There are some strange books there and ones you will recognize.  Many are from foreign authors.  The first book listed is "The Elegance of the Hedgehog" by Muriel Barbery  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Elegance_of_the_Hedgehog and the 1,000th book is "A Room with a View" by EM Forester.  Just for kicks, she adds another 300 books in case you read all the 1001 she lists.

There is no question, many of the entries are a bit esoteric unless you read a quantity of books from different cultures.  I got about two hundred marked off but could never do the 1001.  I am now reading a title from the list that I had not read, "Billy Bathgate" by Doctorow.  I vaguely remember the movie some years back but decided to add this  to the list of the other Doctorow books I have read over the years.  If you pick out 50 books that you may want to try it is worth the effort.  I have circled ten or so that I actually have on my shelves.  I always enjoy lists as a source of potential reads.  The NYT or other best seller lists are not the only place to find books that you might like.  It is also a good site for reviews of books that might not otherwise have a review.  The gal who publishes the blog has a keen insight that may attract some readers looking for good reviews.
