Why do so many people believe America is a Democracy?

We were warned repeatedly by the founding fathers what would happen if we ever became one, look around you, see the news lately? they're warnings are very much becoming a reality.

Truth is were not a Democracy, Don't believe me? recite the pledge of allegiance.

America is by definition a Constitutional Republic, and we were warned extensively by the founding fathers these days would be coming if we ever transformed into a Democracy.

Well, once again they have proven they're age old wisdom to be incalculably correct.

If we're a Democracy then whats the purpose of having a Constitution?  there is none.

The fundamental difference between a Democracy and a Republic is as vivid as night and day.

A republic is rule by "Law" (The Constitution)

A democracy is rule by "majority" (mob rule)

get it together folks and learn the truth, this nation is on the verge of committing suicide.

.

Democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts and murders itself. There was never a democracy that did not commit suicide.

Well, I suppose if you look at some of the other countries whose governments are a little less "unrestrained" - one might think it is at least more democratic. However, I suppose a true democracy would be unmanageable anyway. At least in our country we have a say at the ballot box, which is more than many places in the world.

We are actually ruled by a minority, that being the top one or two percent of the wealthy. The rest of us in the poor and rapidly disappearing middle class are led to believe we have a say when we actually have no voice at all. We are like puppets on a string doing the bidding of the rich and grabbing at any little morsel thrown our way. Slavery has never really disappeared.......it's just not quite as obvious as it once was, and the colors are a bit different.
That is actually true in most places. I do see the oligarchy you speak of though, a little class warfare to go with as you say. There does not seem to be the wide working and middle classes with the changes in tech and the elimination of jobs whether it be to technology or contracting them out to other countries.

has anyone thought to read through the federalist papers? http://www.foundingfathers.info/federalistpapers/

seems to be quite the wealth of knowledge from the founders on what would happen, and clues on how to fix it.

also, the oligarch's wouldn't have any power, if there wasn't the ability for them to control us by throwing us a bone at the expense of the tax payers, such as healthcare and welfare.

The "bones as you call them also include infrastructure and education which enables us all to live a productive, happy life. The same healthcare available to a zillionare should be available to anyone regardless of their ability to pay. Welfare should be available to those who aren't as talented or as lucky as the corporate jet owners...not permerntly, but as a bridge to get them over a bad time.

It seems more evident every day that the ones most able to afford the taxes want to find a way not to pay and to shift the burden to the ones least able to pay. Case in point.....some banks don't charge fees if a large balance is maintained in a checking account. Fees are charged to the little guy who is working two jobs to make ends meet and barely stays liquid. That is completely backwards and discriminatory to the poor.

infrastructure and education are apportioned tax's, which means the ones who use them pay the tax not the ones that don't, and aren't or at least shouldn't be a federal tax, they are local to the communities they support. health care isn't a right and shouldn't be, for anyone. welfare isn't the responsibility of the national populous, try family, or a local church for voluntary support, not mandatory from everyone.

Don't like your bank try a different one. have you read the constitution or the federalist papers, All these issues are addressed there, and good good reasons are given as to why the ideas your setting forth don't work Bob, they prime examples of what a federal Democracy does wrong, not right..

Well, then if you got a 'fix', get yourself elected President and get started. I can hardly wait.

well, the only "fix" I got would be a return to the Constitution. We must get off of the idea that we can just vote ourselves whatever we want and the tax base has to pay for it.

Our tax base is broke, plain and simple, and our government is devaluing the currency we use at such an alarming rate I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it doesn't go into hyper inflation before too much longer. The anger and frustration seems to be placed with large corporations, and Banks whom are not exactly the problem but far from guiltless too. The real problem is "Democracy" itself. We've found the power to simply vote ourselves whatever we want, and our government is doing nothing to stop us, as it just gives them more power over us, and the ability to take away the rights of whom ever it chooses. were in a conundrum of sorts. I do believe that the "fix" lies in everyone having a basic understanding of What governments place in our lives is, and it should be no more than protecting our rights, freedom, liberty, and provide justice for all. not deciding who to tax so that we can have health care. At best that's a state issue, not a federal one. There's good reason why our founding fathers chose a Constitutional Republic as our form of Government, it empowered us to rise to whatever greatness our individuality would provide for us. Lets not give that up for a system of "Democracy" which if you look at history, has always murdered itself and much of it's population with it too.

There has been no Democracy in the history of the world that has succeeded, or lasted more than a few years, they have all failed miserably. Why we don't teach that to our children I have no idea, other than there is something sinister wanting us all to believe we are a Democracy so to get the most powerful and successful nation in history out of it's way. The only people with that agenda are the elite wealthy of the world.

Tool, I have found in the past that your interpretaion of the Constitution is different than how others read it to be, or, how the framers intended it to be...

Healthcare? Wouldn't that fall into the 'life" portion of "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness"? Or, isn't the Declaration of Independence important to you?

Regardless, whether healthcare is a "right" or not, the humane thing to do is too take care of our own when and if we can.

Backatchya...that was very well said, what you said up there ^^^
