TBD on Ning

Christmas is about 5 months away and i'm trying to think of something that is a little bit magical for the kids in this low income area (where I live). Not just free trees or turkeys, but something that will make them say "wow!" Something that will make them think of santa claus and christmas magic and happy things. I'm betting that you have some christmas memories of your own and if you tell me a little bit about them, maybe I can give them to someone else. Hope to hear from you all.

Last year I made wooden spoons out of trees I removed from fence lines.
I fondly remember a box of rocks and a bag of sticks.
Hmm. My favorite memory of my daughter's past christmases was when she, at about the age of four, picked up one of her presents, eyed the "To Ashley" tag suspiciously and asked me, "Daddy - ? Why do you and Santa have the same handwriting?"

Gosh Michael, wouldn't someone else's happy memories make them sad if they have none of their own?

Why don't you have some sort of event that they can participate in...buy a tree, put it outside and have a tree decorating party. You could supply cookies and hot cocoa and play Christmas music???

Quinn, that's exactly what I've been thinking of. My son suggested the same thing. There is a little park in the middle of the area where I could put the tree. We could have hot chocolate, lots of lights and decorations, take pictures of the kids and their families and print them out on the spot, maybe even a santa claus. All of that would be fun for everyone but I still need the "WOW!" factor. Any ideas for that?

hummm...you don't have access to reindeer, do you? :-)

Let me think on it, I'll be back later.

Save some lids from tin cans and let children make ornaments with hammer and nail decorating by punching pattern of holes in them and hang on tree.
good one aggie!

collect some pine cones and let them apply peanut butter and dip in bird seed then hang on tree for birds

Hey, that's a good idea for me! As it is, I collect old bread and toss it out for them all the time. i get clouds of birds filling the yard and they are so used to it that they'll sit outside my windows screaming at me if I forget.
The birds like left over cooked rice too.
