OK.

No Shit.

Honest.

I'm on my way in....

Drat. Shucks and Tarnation. Fraggleraggle Hossenpheffer.

Guido called me at 10:30 Sunday morning with an inner rear infection, too sick to do the fill-in, the candy-ass wuss. I tried to notify you all, but I have yet to figure out how to access TBD/Ning on my cell phone. (I can read stuff, but I can't sign in. Any suggestions, anybody?)

I genuinely feel like I'm letting some of you newer listeners down. I'm normally much more reliable, but things have been hairy lately. NEXT Sunday we'll have to drive to Southern Illinois and take part in the liquidation of a Alzheimer's-afflicted aunt's estate, but I SHOULD be back by 6:00....

How can I sound so callous towards my aunt? Well...After all, it's not like she'll miss me or anything...

Okay, I'm DEFINITELY not doing the show Sunday night - But Guido thinks that he can swing it. I'll be leaving a few choice cheap shots at The King for him to play as he sees fit, but he'll be pretty much calling the shots. Be Nice to him. He's a sensitive little shit.

Look at it this way: I'll treat Elvis with all the respect that he afforded himself. How can a righteous person ask for more than that?

....And here I thought it woulda been the Tiny Tim track. That never fails to make a few folks' heads completely unscrew themselves from their bodies....The Bad Plus are a pretty fearsome trio. They delight in completely breaking a song down into it's component atoms and then re-assembling it from the ground up. Wait 'til you hear what they do to "Smells Like Teen Spirit".
(I myself ain't such a big fan of Mr Reznor either. I've always felt like he was more of a big crybaby than a forward-thinking visionary or artiste`. I'll grant that he's produced some interesting musical textures, but I've never believed a word that came out of his mouth. Besides, Al Jourgensen and any crew that he' happened to throw together on a given night could wipe the floor with NIN, anyway...)

You're all entirely welcome. Mel....What did you think of the Wizard of Oz and the Barry White covers? Hard to believe that both versions were by the same band, eh?

For that matter, the Whigs do a rather great cover of Elvis' "True Love Travels On A Gravel Road." I'm trying to figure out how to put next week's show together. Looks like I may be on the road again, and next Sunday is the anniversary of The Pelvis' kacking it on his little white throne. I have a raft of properly disrespectful and contemptuous songs on the subject, and I'd hate for any of you to have to wait another year to hear them. I gotta figure this out...

Thanks for the mention, Snagg. It took me awhile to figure out the Velouria cover. That was one messed up interpretation, in other words, I liked it. I still get a kick out of the Zevon tune, too. The stand out track for me this week was by NIN and I'll confess to not being the biggest fan of Nine Inch Nails.

I'm not forsaking Lambchop. My vote goes to Wilco. It's a matter of hearing the one and not the other.
Comment by Snagg on August 9, 2009 at 1:58pm
Let's see, tonight's A of the W nominees....

Wilco, "The Album" (Third times the charm)

the Jefferson Airplane, the complete "Woodstock" performance (Never before released - Just bits and pieces.)

Johnny Winter, the complete "Woodstock" performance (Never before released)

Lambchop, "Nixon" (Today is the 35th anniversary of King Milhous scuttling out of the White House once and for all - Although the Lambchop album really has nothing to do with that.)

...and, the ever-baffling "Mystery Album"

OK, I'm not sure how to take this -

I went to the doctor today, a doctor who I've seen many times in the past, but not for about 6 years. In the course of the visit, he realized that I'm the guy who does that radio show that he listens to almost every Sunday night. He was tickled silly. He was quite complimentary and encouraging. He had also never figured out that it was me the whole time.

Now: Should I be flattered that my doctor, a highly intelligent, eccentric and cultured man, is a fan of my musical taste?

Or, should I be worried that the guy in charge of my personal health, who's diagnostic responsibilities are in no small part reliant upon his ability to listen to my medically ignorant babbling and to discern from that the little quirks and clues that could be the harbingers of god-knows-what creeping crud that could be sneaking up on me.....

....Never quite wised up to the fact that I'm the guy he's been dialing into for several years?
