TBD on Ning

I took my Mayan calendar down from the wall yesterday.  I want to keep it close so I can follow the days to the end of the world.  It's coming on December 21, so I am told.  There is controversy as the Mayans have not survived to tell us what they really meant  -- was the end coming or did they just run out of stone to carve more dates on?

I read one survey that claimed about 12% of people believe it is actually coming.  But most don't and experts say there  is no planet or solar object that is going to hit the earth or knock out the sun.  Also, we are not going to be taken over by a plague of locust or any other Biblical curse.  But you never know.

So I am taking the following precautions:

I plan on playing an extra round of golf this weekend in case it is the last one I play.  I am not stocking the refrigerator or buying green bananas.  I will pay no bill until the 22nd of December.  I am calling all my family and friends for a chat,  as this may be it.  There is no sense washing the car or doing the laundry.  I may also go out for a nice meal at my favorite restaurant and put the bill on the credit card.  I am not starting any book that I can't finish in the next few days.  And finally, I have found a Caribbean cruise I like for next February but I will delay booking the room until December 22th.  Oh I forgot, I will also not fill the tank in the car until after the critical date has passed.

First off, everyday is precious, particularly when you have already added up a number already.  Second, the end of the world has been predicted and announced to be found, greatly exaggerated.  Third, it will end, some say in fire or ice, but then that is a coin flip for someone, if there still is someone, way in the future to make.

And remember, the Mayans didn't make much past the 900's before their end was neigh, calendar or no calendar.

I had read an article on the mayan calender and the doomsday prediction and they say that many hundreds of calendars were found when they excavated the sites in Mexico. In only a handful of the calendars found was there an end of the world predicted. Most didn't mention any end of the world. It is most certain that the earth will someday be hit by a celestial object. It happens pretty regularly throughout history and we need to prepare. Even though scientists are "certain" that nothing will hit us, we only monitor about 5% of the asteroids that could spell out our extinction some day.

Funny.  Remember December 31st 1999......That was ...... "another" end of the world.....Pat Boone actually put all his money into Gold!  Well I don't think I will run out and max out my credit cards though!
