Which seems to be the way most issues get resolved (or unresolved) these days in politics.
...we seem to have a couple pubs & maybe even some dems who may be willing to try again on a national gun background check system. Seems some in the country are starting to turn against the fanatical right wing extremism that seems to be running the country today.
Something will pass the Senate, however, it probably will not pass the House.
The wedge will be compliance and security of the borders and unless much more is done to secure the borders which may well be a physical impossibility and too costly to implement and maintain.
The contentious issue in all of this is the nature of the amnesty which is going to be covered as a pathway to citizenship for those living here now. Clearly the Republicans see the pathway as enlarging the voting franchise for Democrats, which, undoubtedly it is.
And then there is the cost of absorbing those staying in this country within the support structures available such as Social Security and health care. Estimates have be made of over $6 trillion net cost to provide benefits to the newly minted citizens.
However, no one is looking to deport over 11 million of those already here, illegally, so, something has to be done.
Of course during the last presidential campaign the idea of self-deportation was criticized and made fun of, while the ongoing inflow of illegals has slowed as a part of the lesser economic opportunity in the United States, increase difficulty of getting pass the borders and the improvement of opportunity in Mexico and other parts of Latin America.
It would appear that additional election cycles will be necessary before the proper momentum evolves to solve the problem. But in the end something like the Gang of 8 proposal will be passed, just not soon.
