just not the same as they used to be...

You've all heard the saying, "They don't make 'em like they used to". What, in your opinion fits that description these days?

The current problem is definitely not related to the water I'm using -- it's a problem in the electrical control unit -- it "shorts" out about five minutes after brewing while it's supposed to be keeping the coffee hot - it beeps, turns off, turns on, beeps, etc. until I unplug it!

I agree with flip: cars (they never shoulda computerized 'em, never). Also, toasters: we bought 1 last week that lasted 1 day.

Other than the fact that the modern automobile is much more complicated than older cars, the sensors and other computerized stuff actually makes the cars much better, in a sense. The only problem is that there are more components that can fail and when they do fail it can be costly to repair them. A good repair manual, online forums, and the ability to handle a wrench sure comes in handy!
