Many countries have been proposed to be the 51st state of the United States, however there is one that is a little more odd than the rest.

In 2012, the Republican Presidential Candidate New Gingrich was known for his outspoken opinions on otherwise controversial topics. However, he did say a rather interesting statement in 2012.

If Gingrich were to have become President, he had a vision of an ambitious new space program and would have wanted a permanent base on the moon by the end of his second term of office. "I am sick of being told we have to be timid and I'm sick of being told we have to be limited to technologies that are 50 years old," Gingrich said.

Newt Gingrich said that if we ever get 13,000 Americans living on the moon, they can petition to have the moon become an American state. The reason he said this was because he was trying to show his support for the American colonization of an Earth satellite.

Unfortunately, we no longer have any means of even getting U.S. astronauts into space at this time unless we hitch a ride from another country.

What are your thoughts?

It's a stupid idea.

Make more since making Mexico the fifty 1st state ...or not...

I am a science teacher and my school is a NASA afilliated school so we keep up with what is going on there...we do experiments and some design work with them. Ya have to consider the source I guess. I know NASA was somewhat bemused with Gingrich's comments. We even did a debate about the pros and cons with my 6th graders last year. I guess a moot point considering he is no longer running for office. Maybe my 6th graders could give him some talking points should the need arise again.

As ideas go...I'm thinking dumb and dumber....for both suggestions

The statehood is really far out there....however, do you realize the technical advances made during the original race for the Moon have never been matched during any other similar period of time? I would love to see the US get out of the save the world business via war and put half the money spent into a new space program...

Why is the US in the war business anyway ? Those Country's over there don't want us there anyhow . Let them handle it themselves . Why we in Afghanistan anyhow , is it for oil , other riches . Heck the Us produces all the oil it needs if they didn't share it to other Country's just to buy it back . Why should US spend so much for a fence on the border when all they have to do is crawl over it . Gosh so many stupid ideas out there that don't make good since anyhow . Guess it's just the way the world works . I would like to see more space exploration myself . If what i wrote don't make since just ignore it ...

You may already do this, but I recommend you bookmark NASA. It has a wealth of info if you are interested in space exploration. Try to make a trip to Kennedy Space Center if you can manage it. I take my students every year...they have so many plans for the trip to Mars. The students I have had in the last few years are the ones in age....that could go to Mars.

I went to Kennedy Space Center back in the middle 70's . Really enjoyed it . I youngest daughter lives near by .

You can go out to the launch pads now.....there is a new Shuttle ride simulator.....and the new shuttle display will be ready in July...I'm a regular space cadet...lol.

why they could have a whole new party...the Lunie party...oh wait....seems that idea is already taken

I'm for the space program most of the time, making the moon a state is what I think is a stupid idea. The earth doesn't belong the the United States and the moon certainly would be something else for other countries to come down on us for.

The US is usually in the war business because it makes people rich. The war mongers are typically on the republican side of politics.

hey we could charge them for moonlight ....and i was being nice...
