i watched a movie the other day called nebraska .. it was shot in black and white and it gave you the vibe of another time .. like 1962 or somethin .. it starred bruce dern and he thinks he won a lottery drawin for a million dollars but he doesn't want to mail his entry in cause they might take his million dollars .. so he has to get from billings montana to lincoln nebraska .. problem is he can't drive anymore .. ( they never did say why but i'm thinkin alcohol might have had somethin to do with it ) so he sets out to walk which of course is extremely stupid .. he gets pickup up on the highway by the police and his son comes to get him and when he realizes he can't convince him that he didn't win he decides to just drive him there himself .. part of me wished they had shot the movie in color because i'd have loved to see the scenery as it really is .. but the director wanted it to be very stark , which it was .. and it looked like it was either fall or very early spring so it probably would have been grey skies and lifeless foliage anyway .. but the thing that hit me right away was as soon as they got on the highway there were hardly no cars .. i had to remark to nancy wow lookit all that traffic they have to deal with .. must be rush hour .. and of course there were only about 3 cars .. if i ever saw traffic like that somewhere around here or in the ny nj metro area i'd think they dropped a bomb and most everybody was dead .. and one of the towns they went to was hawthorne nebraska .. it had 2 bars .. one bar had 4 people in it and the other had maybe a dozen .and that was countin dern and his son and the bartender both times too..  musta been a big nite .. anyway as slow as the movie was i got caught up in it .. like watchin a train wreck in slow motion .. till you get to the point where you have to know , whats gonna happen when they try to cash that ticket in ?? i won't give it away .. i'll just say there was plenty goin on from billings to lincoln .. and just the thought of him winnin a million dollars sure made some people act crazy greedy .. as slow as it started i'd still recommend this movie to anyone who wants a real story about ordinary people . and while the ending wasn't perfect i'd say it was about as good as it could get .. which was quite a few rungs up the ladder from how bleak it started out ..

When my ex and I drove to California, we took Hwy 50 across Nevada. They call it "The loneliest road in America". I saw so few cars that I almost felt like flagging them down to talk to them. We could have. We could have stopped right there in the middle of the road and conducted a lengthy conversation. No one would know or care. (Well.....maybe the cows that were in the road) You drive miles and miles of FLAT land.....and then you climb up and over a mountain range....and then more flat. If you ever get a chance....I heartily recommend this trip. Just make sure you have a full tank of gas and get good mileage. The scenery is spectacular, and it reminds you that driving can be fun.

I have some pictures of Nebraska somewhere but my Montana and Wyoming pictures are more available tonight. This is Lake Helen in the Cloud Peak Wilderness in Wyoming from one of my walkabouts in 2008 at about 9000 ft in June or July. The Cloud Peak is in the Big Horn Mountains where later I worked for the summer in 2011. Yes, Nebraska is comparatively bleak one might say. I was looking for some pictures from something called something like the Toad Stool State Park east of Chadron there but perhaps another time. My favorite writer, Loren Eiseley grew up in Nebraska.

.

We lived at our ranch in Wyoming for 6+ years, it is not that uncommon to drive 25 miles and see only one or two cars. Here in our area in CA I can sometimes drive to Santa Barbara and see only 10 or 12 cars on highway 101, other days there is lots of traffic.  It is very rare to have stop and go traffic, that would drive me nuts. I'm glad the movie had a good ending for you frenchie.

thanks lifey ..i'm not so sure they wrote that endin just for me tho ..lol... but movies have a way of either liftin your spirits or bringin you down ..  have you seen it too ?? if you did what did you think of it ??

and you could be right chiefy .. i should get out and about more but i guess i just don't have that travelin bone anymore .. i did plenty of it when i was younger .. if i did tho then i'd probably be in a band tourin around the country in a wannabago or somethin .. its nice to enjoy a film about someplace else but i don't need to go there to get the vibe .. don't get me wrong tho .. i'm not knockin those that love to travel .. by all means get on your horse and go .. and enjoy it all .. i'm pretty happy down here in florida at my little place, aka the billybob redneck resort..

maybe its just me chief but it looks like nebraska is more of a place that semi's have to drive thru to get to someplace else as opposed to a place to settle down .. one pic has 2 semi's and what looks like a transporter haulin a couple of cars and one car .. next pic looks like 4 semi's and one suv.. utah looks a bit nicer with that snowcapped mountain in the back .. i don't see any semi's in that one ..

uhh .. just the naked ones pat .. ok i'm kiddin .. sure go ahead and post some vaca slides ..
