I think a sociopath is a person with no conscience. No sense of being part of humanity. Unable to control impulses. My best friend's granddaughter, I believe, is one. She does things just for the helluvit. If someone gets hurt....who cares? If something is destroyed? So what? As long as it feels good while she does it, it's ok. At 14 she burned a 16-unit apartment building to the ground. Luckily, the only deaths were pets who couldn't get out. She just wanted to see how it would feel to watch it burn. It was only by sheer accident that most of the occupants were still at work.
I think a psycho is one who really doesn't know if something is wrong or right. A sociopath knows.....just doesn't give a damn.
From www.helpingpsychology.com.sociopath-vs-psychopath-whats-the-difference
"Sociopaths tend to be nervous and easily agitated. They are likely to be uneducated and live on the fringes of society, unable to hold down a steady job or stay in one place. Some sociopaths form an attachment to an individual or a group, though they have no regard for society in general. In the eyes of others, sociopaths are clearly disturbed. Any crimes committed by sociopaths tend to be disorganized and spontaneous.
Psychopaths, on the other hand, often have charming personalities. They are manipulative and easily gain others' trust. They have learned to mimic emotion and so appear "normal" to other people. Psychopaths are often educated and hold steady jobs. Some are so good at manipulation and mimicry that they can have families and long term relationships without those around them suspecting their true nature.
Psychopaths, when committing crimes, carefully plan out every detail and often have contingency plans in place. Because of this marked difference between the methods of crimes committed by sociopaths and psychopaths, the distinction between these disorders is perhaps even more important to criminology than psychology."
psychopaths often are highly successful in the corporate world especially in fields such as banking, insurance and stock brokerage. damage caused by psychopaths is collateral. they know the damage that will befall others and they don't give a shit as long as they achieve their own ends.
sociopaths actually enjoy inflicting the damages on others. that is their goal.
hey mickey good to see you where you bdeen keepin yourself ?
so i gotta ask is there anything inbetween the two ?? my little stepmonster displayed characteristics of both .. she could be manipulative ( boy could she ever ) but if you got to know her you'd see she never showed any signs of sorrow or remorse for anything she did and there was no hidin that .. but she was smart .. smart as a whip actually even tho she had a terrible attitude in school and was put in a special school .. but there's no mistakin her true nature .. unless you're really obtuse and super slow on the uptake .. i'd say she was a little bit of both .. or a lot of both actually ..
Yes, Mickchick, very interesting. I knew about the no conscience aspect of both, but not the other distinctions.
I had hopes that my boys would mature and become psychopaths but they have always been too impulsive.

This article is a bit long so you might not want to bother with it....but there is a chart that compares the two and characteristics that are different.
What I liked about about is there are examples of villains from the movies you might be familiar with and be able draw some distinctions.
I read it - good article. My ex still fits in the psychopath category. He never laid a hand on me, but he had a hair trigger temper, especially when he was drinking (most of the time) and he DID lay his next girlfriend out - knocked her out and gave her a black eye. I thought there were a few times when he was seriously close but restrained himself since I was an assistant DA in GA. Otherwise - I think it would have happened - but only ONCE... AND I would have pressed charges, no matter how embarrassing it may have been.
From the descriptions in Blithe's link I was married to a psychopath and I believe my mother was also a psychopath. The lies and no conscience but they do the most awful terrible things. If you tell anyone about them they start thinking you're the crazy one because they can charm and manipulate to an unbelievable level. Other people think they are wonderful.
At least in my case enough people saw some of the things in action so they were convinced it was him not me. With my mother my friends saw a lot but other people just thought I was making things up. I learned to keep my mouth shut about things that happened because I was the one being judged.
