TBD on Ning

Where I am from (Texas) when a man (or boy) enters a building the first thing they do is take their  hat off if they are wearing one.  In this area (Pacific NW) they leave them on.  What do they do in your neck of the woods?

My personal pet peeve are wearing sneakers or sports shoes for all occasions..besides that they are butt ugly they also track whatever you walked into outside..and they stink and squeel and stick on floors. And you know they aren't running laps around the parking lot or shooting baskets before they crawl in their car...I know it's a personal preference..but personally I would much rather see a well pedicured foot and a nice colored flip flop or sandal with a little bling and sparkle that matches my outfit rather than a pair of clodhoppers with mud and poop or whatever is stuck in the sole...thats gross..and I've seen it and smelled...that'll turn your stomach in a restaurant...eeww.

You have a point there B!  :)

Eeewww, Not a sneaker person here.  I wear them in the gym or if I go boating.  Other than that,I wear heels or sandals or wedges or in the winter, boots with heels.  I never got into the sneaker look.

People wear caps ALL the time here...even in restaurants.

Now to show how old fashioned I can be...wearing caps inside is one of my pet peeves.  About 23 years ago, when my boys were around 13 years old (twins), we were in a restaurant and I asked them to remove their caps. They refused and pointed out that there were 7 or 8 'grown-ups', at various tables, wearing caps. I said that they were with me and I considered wearing caps inside a restaurant rude behavior...they continued to argue with me...and I said they had 3 choices...1) take their caps off 2) see if any of the cap wearing men were interested in paying for their dinners 3) sit on the curb at the side of the restaurant until I was done eating. They chose #3. They have continued making poor choices to this day.

I just returned from Las Vegas... I went to one of the major theater productions. I was appalled at the # of men wearing caps, T shirts, and shorts... often accompanied by a nicely dressed female. I wear shorts and T shirts often...but NOT to the theater or to nice restaurants (not talking Applebees, Chili's etc. ). I like dressing up for restaurants and the theater...sportcoat/tie... to me it makes the occasion feel special. I miss dress codes...there I said it...and I mean it.

When i go see my doctor i wear my fedoria  . Am i rude not taking it off ? I have often thought i was sitting there with it on .

 Wayne...

If you fart in the doctors office and someone loses consciousness... you should remove your fedora out of respect to the fallen patient(s)...otherwise hats/caps worn indoors is apparently a common practice nowadays.

Personally, I don't wear caps/hats indoors, but I'm apparently going against the tide on that behavior.

i never really got the knack for heels or even wedges .. they made me walk funny .. kinda like a girl or somethin .. so i don't do that anymore .. if it gets cold enough i'll wear some boots in the winter tho..

Uno...you mentioning Vegas reminded me of vacationeers around here. There is something in their mindset that shorts and T-shirts are standard uniform anywhere they go in FL. Most of them would never dress that way at home, but here, because they are on vacation, standards go out the window.. There some restaurants that have re-instituted dress codes...I think one of the local symphony and theatre companies have done the same...course then they are concerned about attendance too...

I actually think that many of them do dress like that at home blithe...at least they do around here...'the times they are a changing'.

You are so right, uno! Last winter, on one of Virginia's colder, nastier days, I was in a crowded parking lot, and ther was a lovely young woman, dressed in dressy jeans, high boots, and a pretty jacket. Alongside her was, I presume, her SO. He was wearing shorts, flip flops, a t-shirt, and an open flannel shirt over it. On his head was one of those "Fargo" hats....the ones with the fur-lined ear flaps....which were hanging in the air like big ears. I figure.....she said, "Come on....let's go shopping".....and he got up off the couch, plopped his hat on his head, and walked out. If I had been her, I'd have said, "Oh, no! I am not being seen with you looking like that!". And....on another note......my granddaughter had formal dances they attended in school. I have a picture of my #2 granddaughter....all decked out in a pale blue satin formal my daughter spent weeks making.....long white gloves, heels, and jewelry......standing with her date....who was wearing cargo pants, a blue checkered shirt....un-tucked.....and gym shoes. I couldn't believe it! But we have an,"Anything goes", policy nowadays. There is no code we live by. A few years ago, my gentleman friend took me to a very expensive restaurant for Thanksgiving dinner. I wore a dress, and heels, and my good coat. He wore a sport jacket and dress pants, and his best boots (he was from Colorado). We were the only people in the place that dressed up. The majority were in jeans and t-shirts. They looked at us like we were from outer space. As a matter of fact......the last time my son took me to a very nice seafood buffet place in DC.....the couple at the next table .....who had two young children with them.....were not only wearing jeans and tees....but the tees had obscenities printed on them! Talk about a great example! They can pay $25 a piece for dinner....but they can't afford a decent shirt to wear?

This reminds me of the first wedding I attended in WY, oh boy I was so embarrassed. I was the only woman there in a dress and heels and my husband the only man in a suit. (other than the bride and groom)

Everyone was in their best jeans and western shirts. Some of the women wore frilly blouses.

I only have a little influence within my network of family and friends..I know kids and younger folks don't have too many opportunities to "dress up" and our society is much more causal in their dress and manner..I know my nieces and nephews loved dressing up for their dances and such at school and insisted their dates did also. They dress for weddings, funerals, special events, five star restaurants ( yes we do have a few around here) they have been to the ballet, the symphony, plays and such. But if all these kids get exposed to is Mickie D's, Chili's and all you can eat Buffets and Saturday Night Mud Boggin
Wrestling or laying around on the couch watching video...go figure...There are certain experiences and events that call for a formal atmosphere and those that don't.
I have a few all purpose outfits that serve for those out of ordinary occasions formal times. A special occasion calls for a special look and that where I can exert a little influence and I try...that's all you can do.
