Dogdreams - I'll keep my eye out for that Bergman film I really like the early stuff. One of my favorites is The Magician and then there is a little known film called Hour of the Wolf that really fills one with the essence of isolation. So poignant!

Mark, I always thought Charles Laughton was under appreciated! I enjoyed that version of the Bounty even if it wasn't so close to the original book (There's the letter and the spirit of the law you know! And speaking of the law he was great in Witness for the Prosecution and Advise and Consent too.)

The community are individuals, when the individual changes, the community changes. Balancing these changes on a small and large scale is the problem perhaps. "Fiddler" is a great film as it shows the balance shifting and
changing - it is also entertaining.

Yes, Thomas, but their decisions also affect the community because of the closeness of their bonds and it is clear that it is a balancing act (hence the title) between change (the dissolution of tradition) and maintenance of community.

I believe the choices made by Tevya`s daughters reflect these concerns and the film leaves open the qustions and problems that arise leaving it for the viewer to decide their own answers. In the end it is for the individual to choose the solution that meets THEIR needs.

Agreed, Thomas, perfect timing, excellent music - great directing and editing! Tony, Robert and Norman all deserve huge credit. I get goose bumps every time - of course the whole issue of how much to cleave to Tradition and how much to stray is a huge issue and as a woman I recognize both the absence of rights in the traditional approach and the rip in the fabric of the society that occurs when tradition must change.
