Three thousand deer were to be unsuspecting  targets of federal sharpshooters over a 40 night period beginning February on Long Island's South Fork and East Hampton areas but opposition to the deer slaying has stopped the shooting for now. The deer population has caused car crashes, property damage, ruined crops, and even spread lyme disease. Residents and town officials of some of the Eastern Long Island areas where deer are often seen say the deer population has grown too large for their own good or public safety.

A lawsuit has been filed to stop these federal sharpshooters including marksman Bob Dinero. East Hampton Wildlife president Chris Walken has said he believes the deer population is actually declining and a more humane way to control the population of these white tailed animals should be implemented BUT only if deemed necessary.

It is in the spirit of a more humane method to  eradicate  any excess deer population that the Long Island Farm Bureau has come up with a plan:    lions and tigers......and deer oh my. lions and tigers and deer oh my. With the Ringling Brothers Circus coming soon to Manhattan's Madison Square Garden in New York City, biological control seems to be the feline logical solution according to circus president Leo Katz.

Nine lions and nine tigers,(males and females) ,including two Siberian white tiger males will be released on Eastern Long Island  at pivotal overnight hours starting in mid January if necessary. All these animals have implanted radioactive tags so they can be located at any given time. They pose no threat to people as they have been trained not to harm people and actually avoid human contact.  But the deer,as a natural prey to these nocturnal deer slayers will be helpless from their natural predators.

As extra safety precautions, there will be additional signs for deer crossings, as well as lion and tiger crossings in English, Hindi.and Swahili  . This humane means of deer population reduction will take place only  if it is proved that their numbers are growing on Long Island's South Fork, otherwise the felines will be at their full time jobs entertaining children of all ages at the circus.
