Frank Hatley spent more than a year in jail for failing to pay child support for a child who isn't his.

Not all cases are as extreme as this. I know men (and I suppose women, I'm not trying to sexist here) who are jailed for not paying child support. How does anyone expect them to pay when they are in jail, and the state is paying to house them.

I used to work in a men's homeless shelter and we did get men who had just gotten out of jail for not paying child support.

Some of the men had degrees, a good job, and a decent life until the economy took a hit. Then they did too. Went from homeowner with wife and kids, wife couldn't take the stress of him being out of a job so divorced, got custody of the kids because he didn't have a job, he had to pay child support and alimony, but he still doesn't have a job.

So he gets picked up for not paying child support and jailed for a period of time while he ponders his way out of his sucky life.

My idea is that instead of paying to house these guys, use the money to pay the child support as long as they are looking for a job and can prove it. Help them become retrained in a job that works for this environment. In Michigan, the state pays for the women in these situations to get trained in a viable job because they have the children to support, since the state jailed the man who was supposed to be paying support.

This has always irritated me. I taught these women for 8 years. I had few men. They were all being paid by the state to be in a class and the state or city paid for their education through a grant.

Something is wrong with this picture.

well, some of this happens here too. We have the attach your wage (doesn't work if they aren't working, and in Michigan, they aren't working); the income tax return (if they don't work, they won't get income tax).

I like the look for a job and prove it tier. That does give somebody else a job (me). I had to call everyone on the list of 'where I applied' and the response was always "No, we didn't hear from that person"

There are just too many people out of work here, and it started long before the auto companies went down, because it was in the wind, and things started going downhill then.

Thanks for your response, Brine, it was nice to hear from you.

Why should it matter whose child it is?  Marriage is a package deal.  Families are not pro-rated.
