On Friday, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie posted a video showing him smashing a spider on his desk in front of a group of visiting school children. In a statement provided to TPM, Ingrid Newkirk, president of People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals, described Christie's killing of the spider as a thoughtless act.
"He probably did it without thinking. Some people put the spider outside, but spiders are often scary to people, and that can prevent them from pondering their worth," Newkirk said.
This isn't the first instance of a high-profile politician killing an insect on film. In 2009, President Barack Obama swatted a fly during a televised interview. President Obama's fly-killing provoked a similar response from PETA, which released a statement dubbing it an "executive insect execution" that criticized peoples' thoughtless treatment of insects.

I didn't know Obama was a Repub. No wonder he caves in to them so often.

I used to take spiders outside...then someone explained to me that 'indoor' spiders could not survive out in the elements and vice-versa.

What to do?  What to do?

Smash them. I have a ten inch Y shaped scar on the back of my right leg thanks to a Brown Recluse spider. I have no love for them.

PA, Ta Dah, we agree.

People are like cannons:

Ready to go off for the smallest reason.

But if there really was "indoor spiders", where did they live before humans came along with houses?  Now if it is winter where I live and freezing, then putting things out would be problematic.  It they were out when winter came on they would naturally crawl into wood piles under leaves, crevices, etc.  I  often take them outside.

Kitty heaven is not going well for my kitty.

She loved to catch and eat spiders.

(Don't tell PETA)

George used to put the spiders outside.  I used to call for George when I found a spider in the house.   :-)

I just let the spiders catch the flies.

I was waiting for someone to write:
I love spiders fried.

Fried spiders dipped in chocolate might be good.

There are plenty of drumsticks.
