A dog in the US is being hailed a lifesaver after it chewed off its owner's infected toe.

Jerry Douthett, from Rockford, Michigan, was passed out drunk when his jack russell terrier Kiko bit off a large chunk of his toe.

"Jerry had had all these margaritas, so I just let him sleep," his wife, Rosee, told the Grand Rapids News.

"But then I heard these screams coming from the bedroom, and he was yelling, 'My toe's gone, my toe's gone!'"

When the 48-year-old went to hospital to get treatment for his injuries, doctors realised that he was suffering from type two diabetes

I know Michigan is going to the dogs, but this is ridiculous.
"I used to do a lot of surgery, but now that I'm retired I've really gotten into gardening! I know an emergency when I see it, though. "

This whole story made me want to throw up.....He is one stupid man.
From what I saw, you are sooo right. How can anyone be so far into denial that they would let their foot rot away rather than see a doctor?

The dog was probably just exasperated with him, couldn't stand the smell any more and took care of it.

You know, dogs have been trained as sniffers to detect high and low blood sugar in diabetics and are considered a category of 'help dogs' like seeing-eye for the blind. They can also smell out certain kinds of cancer, like melanoma. Here's an article.
I heard them discussing this on the radio this morning. They were having way too much fun with this story.
