So it now seems that it is the Republicans who are the great friends and protectors of Medicare. As Bill Clinton would say, "Give me a break!" Harry Truman and Lyndon Johnson must be rolling over in their graves. It was the Republican Party that fought tooth and nail to oppose government-sponsored health care for older Americans. And now, in the current health care debate Republicans are saying "Look to the Republican Party to preserve Medicare. It's the Democrats who want to gut the program." What the Republican leaders are now saying in effect is this: "Oh, just forget what we used to say about health care legislation, we have changed our minds now; we have been reading the public opinion polls about these things and now we know what the American people want." And they say: "Don't leave the task of drafting health care legislation to those Democrats who first urged it and who have already laid the foundations for it, and who have had to fight all of us Republicans inch by inch during the last sixteen years to do it. Why just turn to us. We'll do it so skillfully that we won't add a dime to the national debt or exclude a single American from health insurance.'"
The more things change the more they stay the same.
During a presidential campaign speech delivered in September 1944 -- while the Second World War raged in Europe and the South Pacific -- President Franklin Roosevelt said: "What the Republican leaders are now saying in effect is this: 'Oh, just forget what we used to say, we have changed our minds now; we have been reading the public opinion polls about these things and now we know what the American people want.' And they say: 'Don't leave the task of making the peace to those old men who first urged it and who have already laid the foundations for it, and who have had to fight all of us inch by inch during the last five years to do it. Why just turn to us. We'll do it so skillfully that we won't lose a single isolationist vote or a single isolationist campaign contribution.'"
As Bob Strauss has said: "You can fool some of the people all of the time. And those are the people you need to work on." Well, the Republicans have been working on those people for the last 65 years. The Republican Party is a party with a mission: to fool some of the people all the time.
