The Knave and the Maiden

There was once a son of a powerful, wealthy and well-connected family. In fact, his family was the closest thing to Royalty his countrymen had ever seen. He had all the advantages of life. The best education, owned beautiful properties and enjoyed the adulation and yes, worship of millions. When his brothers sallied forth to change the world they were slain and so the mantle was passed on to our privileged one.

His was a future guaranteed. Why, he was the closest thing to an inheritor of the throne if ever there was one in his land. Power, influence, fame and fortune awaited, but alas, it was not to be quite as planned. For our "hero" as some thought of him was wanting in one thing: temperance and humility (ok maybe he was lacking in two things.) For one night, when he had the company of a beautiful young maid (a commoner really, no doubt star-struck by the proximity of this larger-than-life figure,) our hero, our conquerer our (dare I say it?) great white hope overindulged in the bottle (as it turns out, the bottle was another of his weaknesses.) OK, lets not mince words, our handsome admirable hero became positively sh*tfaced. While in this state he took on the responsiblity of transporting the impressionable maiden home for the evening.

Alas for the poor maid and her as yet undetected unborn child (very likely the offspring of the "hero" as it turns out) the young prince Edward was so blindingly drunk he could not keep the car on the road and so they ended up in a pond, underwater, upside down. The young maid was still in the car when the fortunate hero broke the water's surface gasping for air.

Immediately, our young hero started calling out her name and then diving down to find her where he bravely risked his life over and over again trying desperately to free her from the...oops, wrong story.

Immediately, our young hero ran to the nearest house and pounded loudly on the door yelling "Help!, help! There's a woman trapped in a car in the pond! Come quick! Call an ambulance! HELP!!!"...oops! my I am sorry, I keep getting it wrong!

OK. He left the scene of the accident and did not report it until many hours later. After he had called his lawyer.

It would seem that this story is a tragedy, but don't fret too much on the Prince's account (the maid you see, really is of no consequence.) Because of the young Prince's background and family, the incident was made to quietly "go away" much like an unwanted pregnancy. The people forgave the good Prince because after all. He was a PRINCE mind you and he was willing to feed, clothe, house and provide medical care to any and all who would lay their freedom at his feet, worship him and tell him what a good and decent man he was. They rewarded him with a 47 year career as one of the most powerful figures in the land.

LION? Yes, Lion in the sense that a lion is a powerful and ruthless predator.

Sorry Alendar, no statue of limitations for murder. But when you are part of the elite ruling class, who needs statues? Those are for the peasants to live by.

Can't we let byegones be buygones? Isn't there some sort of statute of limitations on murder, anyways?
