I didn't know David Mason, thanks for telling me about him.
I was ten when "Penny Lane" came out. It struck me as much for the surrealist lyrics as did the trumpet solo, which was something you didn't hear a lot of on Top 40 radio at the time. I also remember trying to tell if some of it was trumpet, and if some it was harmonica.
I do believe I was sitting in my Mom's old Rambler when it came out of the radio, but my brother brought the "Magical Mystery Tour" album home soon afterwards, and I could sneak listens to it much easier after that.
