David Mason died about 2 weeks ago.

I'm sure he gave you goosebumps, or made you happy, or made you sing out loud.

He was the trumpet player that played the wonderful solo in the song "Penny Lane" by the Beatles.

You remember it? Don't you?

Where were you when you listened to it?

Haha..Thanks Faye.....I think so many of our parents had one when we were growing up......Remember the Orange 76 union balls we put on our car antennas?
Not me.  I had a tiger tail sticking out of my tank.

One of my favorite Beatles songs. And, I've always loved the trumpet solo...

I didn't know David Mason, thanks for telling me about him.

There's just something about it that struck home with me.
I didn't much care for the song, or the Beatles in general by this time.  I was starting to get more into Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard.  Of course The Stones still ruled supreme with me when Penny Lane came out.
Johnny Cash sang a song about a "Wrinkled Crinkled Wadded Dollar Bill".  I was always mad at him for throwing that dollar in Lake Michigan...he could have bought a day old cake with that!!!

I was ten when "Penny Lane" came out. It struck me as much for the surrealist lyrics as did the trumpet solo, which was something you didn't hear a lot of on Top 40 radio at the time. I also remember trying to tell if some of it was trumpet, and if some it was harmonica.

I do believe I was sitting in my Mom's old Rambler when it came out of the radio, but my brother brought the "Magical Mystery Tour" album home soon afterwards, and I could sneak listens to it much easier after that.

Those were the days!
