Where's Brit? He would know.
Well, I think their calendar includes a fourth of July.....I don't know if they celebrate anything that day though.

`smirk`
Yes, I know their calendar includes a fourth of July, Stir!
I took the question to mean, do the English have a holiday that corresponds to our Fourth of July holiday.
They don't, because they never have liberated themselves from the bondage of royalty.

;-D

However, they do technically have their National Day, April 23, which is named for their patron saint, St George - just as Ireland has St Patrick's day, Scotland has St Andrews' Day, and Wales has St David's Day. I don't think it is a holiday, and probably in England - and all over the world - St Patrick gets the most celebration: he throws the best parties!

Maybe the closest, though a fairly solemn day, is November 11, Remembrance Day (formerly Armistice Day), where they honor those who fought to keep the country free.
Yes, Chez, they still have royalty - I think they like it that way. :-)

Thanks for the info about Great Britain's countries' patron saints and their holidays, I like hearing about things like that!

We do have November 11 in common with them though - our Veterans Day and their Remembrance Day. I remember it used to be called Armistice Day here too.

It sells a lot of tabloids, draws a lot of tourists. ;-D

In Europe, the patron saints are everywhere. Each town in France has its own, and celebrates on the day, usually with a brocante (community yard sale), snack stands, rides for the kids, music, and lunches or dinners prepared by the local Comité des Fêtes. Our village is named for St Paddy, so our fête is on the closest weekend. Our brocante is usually one of the best for our size (pop. 650), probably because we have a couple in town who organize them, and they draw a great crowd. They're open to pros as well as the locals, so there is always a lot of great stuff to scrumble through. It covers the playfield behind the community hall and lines the streets for several blocks. (That is to say, it covers most of the village ;-D)

This isn't ours, but it's typical:

I like the idea of patron saints for towns. Another reason to have a celebration!
I'll have to check to see if YoVille has a patron saint.
St Arnold is the patron saint for beer.
Go figure....and here I always thought it was St Pauli's Girl.
Only in Hamburg.
Most countries do have a 4th of July.
