Today in Musical History, September 14th:
1955: A bored and restless Little Richard, on a lunch break while in the studio with Bumps Blackwell, hauls off and rips through the original, utterly filthy version of "Tutti Frutti" -
And Blackwell, who had been unhappy with the bland, cautious material that had already been laid down, grabs a nearby songwriter, Dorothy Bostrie, to re-write the racy lyrics into acceptable radio fodder, cues the band, and hits "Record" -
And, one could make a strong argument that rock & roll is born, right then and there.
Just another of the apparently inexhaustible Mike Dillon's million-and-one bands and musical projects.
