International waters are, well, international, and protected as such by maritime law with unhindered passage allowed to non-belligerents. These very laws the American Naval forces have used in the past as in the example of John Paul Jones, and the founding of our navy. And that Navy, the American Navy, is the uncontested queen of the open seas, and has been for decades, particularly since the fall of the Soviet Union.
Once we believed in a 3-mile protected limit, as to unrestricted shipping, to make sure, in part, we had access to everyone else's coasts, or at least a justification, and also had the advantage of being the range of our coastal guns. Then we believed in the 12-mile limit, because it protected our resources from someone else using them, and then now we believe in the continental shelf as a limit of what we control, in that resources are our resources, and they are ours; first, last and always.
There always has been comfort in seeing the flag, the American flag, especially when overseas in some place foreign. The American flag has been carried throughout the centuries by our ships in whatever port they are in, or being on the high-seas. Just ask the Japanese, how happy they were to see our flag when Commodore Perry and his fleet sailed into Tokyo harbor in 1856, uninvited, and the Japanese were probably just as thrilled to see the flag when the Allied fleet, with the battleship, U.S.S. Missouri, sailed into that same harbor in 1945 to accept their surrender, invited and to end WWII.
So, is there a story here? Like, say, The Hunt for Red October? Probably not. Or, is this a crisis like the naval blockaded of Cuba in 1962, again, no, no way. But what it is, is, a tweak of the nose, a spit into the wind, a show of force by the Grand Duchy of Fenwick, so to speak.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has been reported(and yes, this could be something the Onion would cook up) will sail one of their naval ships, a 1972 vintage frigate and a support ship, in the coastal waters near New York City, or some other American east coast city. yet undetermined or otherwise indicated.
As a threat to America and Americans, of course, you got to be kidding. But then again, the Iranians are not amused by the use of the 'Persian' Gulf as an American Navy bathtub. And yes, we can remember the attack on the U.S.S. Cole in Yemen in the waning days of President Clinton's second administration, so maybe, not so funny after all.
Of course, the Iranians have the right to put their ships wherever they would like, subject to maritime law. And one would think, the Port of New York would welcome them, and Iranian sailors, in a naval tradition longer than the history of the United States.
And of course, wherever the Iranians send their ships, we will follow them, closely; on the water, under the water, in the air and in space. Any Iranian ship and the lives of their sailors on board those ships have and will have their very breathing recorded, along with a deep and constant threat analysis, and if necessary, any threat posed by such a ship or ships, responded to.
So, as a matter of practical survival, our Navy would in two minutes or so, sink such a threat to the bottom of whatever waters them are in, and that would be followed with a sincere, diplomatic letter of condolences sent to Tehran, maybe.

You guys still try'n to start another war?
lol ....
Us and Fenwick...probably...US and Iran...this is the 38th anniversary of the take over of the American embassy in Tehran, and yes, the slogans are the same about the Great Satan.
And yes, there is progress made...but then again, that progress is and was conditional on a number of things, like the decommissioning of centrifuges and at this point, the Iranians point is, what centrifuges...
While we have no drama 2014 domestically except for the weather, the rest of the world moves on to further confusion and chaos in places like but not exclusively Syria. This administration, the last three years of the Obama lameduck administration, has much to do and provide leadership on these world issues for the safety of the United States and the rest of the world. Do this and the administration can make its greatest contribution to the country and people.
As to the rest of 2014, now the debt limit drama has past, we go into the crux of the primary season, and then maybe, that there might be an opportunity to do something on immigration, though that all of depends on whether current Republicans feel threaten, or feel confident, confident that the base is docile enough to deal with the issue before the November election.
However, betting has to remain that nothing will be done until the November election and after the dust settles can anything get done. So, it remains the president's watch on foreign policy that is the most pressing of business for the presidency, and raising money for local, state and national campaigns where he is welcomed.
The most interesting player in all of 2014 remains HRC. Will she move into or be pushed into making political and policy statements before she wants? She is smart enough and has a smart staff that should insure, that she waves, looks around and be seen, tactfully keeps her distance away from Bill and shows up with the right people who have money to give her, then publish a campaign book in 2015 and play defense against any primary challenges, knowing 2016 is her's to lose, and to gain her third term, for now.
Stays away from Bill? Who would that help, you or me? lol ....
Chris Christie is outed as a RINO by Conservatives and a Neo-Conservative by Libertarians (Tea Party), so he's toast. Now the only character the right has may be Rand Paul. Unfortunately no educated intellectual or Independent will touch a sloppy speaker, and then even after plagiarizing, cheating. Senator Paul's most recent book Government Bullies had been copied from Heritage Foundation and Cato Institute studies without attribution. Fools who live in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks, and of all people Bill Clinton. Even Karl Rove thinks Rand is pathetic.
.
For the Republicans, a long time to go to 2016, and Christie was going to have a hard time of it to make through the primaries. As of now, probably a sitting governor will be the Republican candidate and there are a lot other than Christie. As to Paul or Cruz, a presidential run is problem, in that, if they lose, what do they gain, that they don't already have. So far, there isn't a Reagan out there for the Republicans, and too many Goldwaters.
Again, we are three years out, 2016 is HRC's to lose, and she has done it in the past, before she could even warm up for her victory lap in the primaries....
Are you sure 2016 is far enough away?
Unemployed Americans Increasingly Frustrated With Congressional Ina...
The issue of 2014 is retention of the current congressperson or senator for the national scene, as of now, is, the House is going to remain Republican and the Senate is in play, with a low probability of a Republican majority, though the Democrats will lose seats of their majority.
The keys for the 2014 campaign are, the poor implementation of ObamaCare and doubts as to actual benefit, operation and overall costs. The other key is low growth, slow growth of the economy and uncertainty of jobs after five years of the current administration and congress.
Of course, there are under card elections in the states for all of their offices and leaders which probably represent no change in red/blue mix overall. There are plenty of state and local issues that have to be played out and most of them favor that the Red will be retained if not increased slightly.
The point of 2014 to 2016 is which voice and face will be used in the media to be the favorite and how the favorites track with the ongoing campaigns and winners of 2014.
Depend on HRC to do something to sandbag any opponent from getting traction against her, and that means Elizabeth Warren, from stirring up the left and pointing out that HRC has a 'just like us' problem with her and Bill being with the rich and famous, not with the people.
As for the Republicans, it remains a free for all, where the idea of jostling each is only the beginning of what it will take to win the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, and it may be a Goldwater candidate, knowing they are going to lose but gainsay a cause for the next election.
The most important result of 2014 will be what will the reconstituted 114th Congress look like in leadership and what can it get done before the 2016 campaign effects the then ongoing debate and issues.
This all is contingent on a world that does not blow up, under Obama, and we are in another Middle East war or otherwise engage in hot spots around the world where our troops are in harms' way.
"The keys for the 2014 campaign are, the poor implementation of ObamaCare and doubts as to actual benefit, operation and overall costs." only to the R Base. We need to listen to the country, not just Fox and Limbaugh. ~80% DO NOT want Obamacare repealed.
Go ahead and run on that lol ...
They will...l3...and will get traction as the rollout continues putting the administration and those that support have to continue to back step and defend the "hidden" consequences of ObamaCare which will continue to play out.
And yes, 3.3 million enrolled is a number, but not a good one, IF, compared to what was said to be necessary to make the insurance scheme viable. Worse, not getting the demographics distribution and having providers scratched from being available makes the whole implementation shaky. Then changing the employer, small employer mandate to after 2014 is obviously trying to avoid the enviable consequences of what will employers do when the law says they have to be compliant.
So as not to leave any doubts, I know we have to change health care provision and financing and ObamaCare is on that path to do what we have to do, but, the way this has been implement is not a slope to something else and better, but is a bump that is going to slow down what needs to happen.
We have to examine, HRC and her version 2, the reboot of HillaryCare, which will be a form of single payor, universal coverage program which will have to use the forms of cost containment embedded in the ACA...
As I have quoted before...Once Americans have tried everything...they will do the right thing...WC....
Don't forget that the Act is working well and all of the Republican claims have already been debunked as Bu__Sh__.
This nonsense is like using Viagra for gay necrophiliacs, do what you want but it's still a dead end.
Need another thread...but that will happen...could move over to BE, l3...just saying....
What is "BE", Before Evolution?
