There isn't any good way to put this, gun control legislation is in pieces and those pieces left, represent mostly edge issues, not the main issue of control and limitations on the sale, distribution and use of gun weapons.
Many could not imagine this result after the Newtown shootings, but then again many don't have understanding of the politics of guns, their possession and use as a part of a way of life and a set of firmly held beliefs for a minority of Americans and their rights under the 2nd Amendment.
What also is not taken as seriously as it should be is that the political process, is not an opinion poll, but a process, that has to take into account success of legislation seeking to be enacted, offset by the cost of failure and the consequences if the legislation is not passed.
The Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, has calculated that legislation of an automatic weapons ban is not going to pass and therefore, not to be presented to the Senate for a vote. The idea is to wait for a bill that can pass on gun issues which is not currently forthcoming. At this point the issue of gun control will be pushed, subject to changing circumstances, to the 2014 elections as to who will run with the issue and win, and win enough votes to pass an automatic weapons ban in the next congress.

Nothing will happen until after 2014, and then only if Tea Party Mentality Congressmen are a minority and Senate DINOs are bad history. Republicans have gone berserk again like their Whig Party ancestors in the 19th century.
Shows you how powerful the NRA is. They even have some Demos in their pocket.......

Her former husband, Corey Holten, threatened to put a gun in her mouth and pull the trigger, she wrote in her petition. He also said he would “put a cap” in her if her new boyfriend “gets near my kids.” In neat block letters she wrote, “ He owns guns, I am scared.”
The judge’s order prohibited Mr. Holten from going within two blocks of his former wife’s home and imposed a number of other restrictions. What it did not require him to do was surrender his guns.
About 12 hours after he was served with the order, Mr. Holten was lying in wait when his former wife returned home from a date with their two children in tow. Armed with a small semiautomatic rifle bought several months before, he stepped out of his car and thrust the muzzle into her chest. He directed her inside the house, yelling that he was going to kill her.
“I remember thinking, ‘Cops, I need the cops,’ ” she later wrote in a statement to the police. “He’s going to kill me in my own house. I’m going to die!”
Ms. Holten, however, managed to dial 911 on her cellphone and slip it under a blanket on the couch. The dispatcher heard Ms. Holten begging for her life and quickly directed officers to the scene. As they mounted the stairs with their guns drawn, Mr. Holten surrendered. They found Ms. Holten cowering, hysterical, on the floor.
For all its rage and terror, the episode might well have been prevented. Had Mr. Holten lived in one of a handful of states, the protection order would have forced him to relinquish his firearms. But that is not the case in Washington and most of the country, in large part because of the influence of the National Rifle Association and its allies.

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md.—Wayne LaPierre's critics have called him a lot of things in the past few months: A lunatic, crazy, a gun nut. But from his perspective as the executive director of the National Rifle Association, he's the only sane guy in the room.
As an outspoken gun-rights lobbyist, LaPierre has faced heavy scrutiny for his defense of firearm ownership in the aftermath of a recent string of mass shootings. Through the NRA, LaPierre has vehemently opposed new proposals in Congress to build a more robust system of background checks on gun sales and curtail ownership of some firearms.
Speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday, the day after a Senate panel considering new gun legislation approved an assault weapons ban, LaPierre argued that despite his opponents' criticism, they're the ones out of step with reality, not him.
"It's time for us to take a sane look at the insanity that's consumed all too much of the media and the political class in this town. They wag a finger condemning the NRA. They call us crazy," LaPierre told the group of conservative activists, before reciting one-by-one the list of the NRA's gun safety, training and education programs. "Each year we teach millions of law-abiding people how to use, store and defend themselves with firearms. We've been training America's military and law enforcement officers since NRA's founding in 1871. And they call us crazy?"

Pure B.S.
It was first Charted in 1871 and its first President was, well-known Civil War veteran, General Ambrose Burnside...They had their very first shooting contest in 1873...Duh...
It wasn't until 1949, that it lunched its first hunter education program!!!
Plus it wasn't until 1998 when it had its largest convention ever and named, who know who actor as its President...
When people start sprouting crapola statements like this...You got to wonder WHY?
So how was everybody first day of Spring...lol Cold here...
the police and the military train their own people. lapierre could say that the nra has been involved in training americans in gun use but that is all. his statement implies that the nra is the last bulwark against the ravening hordes trying to break into your homes and rape your dogs and beat your wives...
Yep it sure does...
always foreword backwards, inside out...
