Not that many years ago our jails incarcerated ~300,000. Now they hold ~3,000,000.
The reason -- the war on drugs. So, what are we doing?
If we look at the history, law enforcement and the courts have been skewed towards prosecuting blacks more often and more harshly. Convicted felons can not vote. There are entire neighborhoods, even political districts, where no one can vote ... that is, no blacks can vote.
Now we have an additional onslaught of spin riddled with racism and candid admission about The New Jim Crow laws. Only two states have not had someone(s) interested in trying to pass restrictive voting laws between 2006 and 2011. This included voter ID laws, proof of citizenship requirements, voter registration limits, early voting and absentee voting restrictions, and restrictions on felons’ voting rights according to a study conducted by University of Massachusetts. 1
So ... is the Jim Crow Laws Era dead?

This is a tough one, particularly if you don't live in gated community.
Crime is not the problem, criminals are. Which is what you have to deal with if you live in places where a criminal doesn't really concern themselves with the crime, that is what they do. And do it because it can be gainful employment and a good income as long as you don't get caught, and if caught, can serve the time, or have access to a good lawyer, more or less.
As to the War on Drugs, we win it everyday and lose it every night. It is what people want and willing to spend for it even if they are addicted, and be addicted again give a chance.
What we have to see about drugs is that it is a social problem compounded with just about everything there is as to living life, which, by the way can be hard, very, very hard thing to do, without some help from your friends, so to speak...friends with serious problems, such as violence, mayhem and a serious lack of morality and compassion for others.
...and if we incarcerate more blacks then whites, they can't vote for Democrats.
At first I could not see what was going on, but like Cheney used American soldiers in Iraq to make money for Halliburton and himself, some politicians are willing to destroy and /or maim American lives to get into their positions of power. But I repeat ...
