I heard earlier this year that Java was having problems so it was best to disable it.  Now I hear that the latest version & update (v. 7, upd. 10) is okay.  Anybody heard differently?  (I only would use Java on a couple of game sites; so if it's still problematic, I don't want to take the chance.)  Thanks for any advice and happy new year to all.

Forgot to add:  I'm using Win7, 64bit.

I receive Kim Komando's news letter each Saturday. She mentioned the update today and thinks it to be OK. But you may not need java for much of what you do and you can go to the control panel on Windows and open java, click security and uncheck the enable java in browser. Supposedly when you go to sites that need it, you will be asked if you want to run it.

...always wondered why a few different anti virus apps red tag java at high risk...

...I've disabled java on my machines, and haven't yet found a reason that I need it...

Java is a programming language designed in Sun Microsystems (now part of Oracle) for web applications that invoke some functions on your machine. The provisions for security and privacy were not well thought out so it requires a lot of maintenance to prevent security leaks. If you can do without it you are better off.

Good info, everyone; thanks!

thanks, everyone.....all good advice!

I wonder if Java started having probs when Oracle took 'em over; we got an Oracle-made software program at work shortly before I retired and holy cow, what a piece of cr@p it was!  Hmmm...

Anyway, thanks again for all the great help & advice and happy new yrs to all, ea. and every1! :-)

Oh, boy, the saga continues:  I had Java disabled on both computers but am finally getting around to *uninstalling* it (going thru the Control Panel's uninstall process) & when I select Java & click on "Uninstall" I get the following msg:

USER ACCOUNT CONTROL:  Do you want to allow the following program (Java SE Runtime Environment 7 Update 7) to update software on this computer?

Should I tell it "Yes"?  That "update software" rather than "uninstall" makes me nervous; or is that just what windows calls uninstalling in this case?  Thanks again for any advice.

I don't think you need to be nervous officer, until driving around New Years Eve. I might do the update and then if you want try to uninstall it again do that.If you just do what I mentioned above, it won't be running in your browser anyway. Let's see what Pete says since I mostly don't have a clue myself lol.
