Although they are a little slow to the punch, even respected and venerated pundits and politics watchers are beginning to use the T-word (terrorism) in regard to the Republicans game of gambling with the financial reputation of the nation. Republicans have taken lessons on how to speak about debt and deficits, how to gloss over the fact that their very party ran up the deficit along with Democrats over the years, how to conveniently forget how readily and frequently they raised the national debt ceiling during the Bush administrations.

Now even their partners in crime, big business, are starting to get nervous. Having the US default on its debts (or even come close) will take a huge bite out of both their bottom line, and their future prospects. If that happens, businesses will really know the meaning of "shared sacrifice."

Republicans are willing to become political terrorists because they despise the president so much. Of course, few will actually say this out loud (thank you Mitch McConnell and Jim DeMint), but it doesn't take an advanced degree in political science to see what their motivation really is. Their natural tendency to walk, trot, and run in lock-step for political purity makes them quite willing to stampede off the cliff, like so many buffalo, unaware of the danger until the ground disappears beneath their feet. This time, they'll drag the rest of us over the cliff with them. If you think times are desperate in the United States of America now, just wait until the world loses confidence in our economy.

Democrats have offered cuts in favorite programs. What have the Republicans offered?

With the Tea Party quite willing to blow the government up, the lie factory in overtime production, the establishment Republicans protecting the wealthiest Americans along with big oil, and the proposed field of Republican presidential hopefuls all too ready to nuke the government.

No surprise there.

Fundamentalism is the concept that not only is actual reality is less "real" than someone's personal perception of reality, but those people have the right and the duty to force their personal reality onto someone else.

Thus: Talking snakes, trickle-down economics and magic underwear.

It's a sad, tough world, Vernon, but as long as I live I'll NEVER understand people who deal with The Real World by  pretending it doesn't exist and making up one of their own.

I hear you, Snagg.
