The immediate problems are rising food and energy prices, shortages of water and increasing migrations "due to political, environmental and economic conditions", which could plunge half the world into social instability and violence. And organized crime is flourishing, with a global income estimated at $3 trillion – twice the military budgets of all countries in the world combined.

The effects of climate change are worsening – by 2025 there could be three billion people without adequate water as the population rises still further. And massive urbanisation, increased encroachment on animal territory, and concentrated livestock production could trigger new pandemics.

I wonder what is being done to combat/control the escalating world crisis.

I plan to die before it gets totally out of control.

 

For years I have been trying to convince people that overpopulation is the major cause of the worlds problems.

There seems to be no way to convince the conservitive religious right that it is a problem.

The poorer the country, the more religious it seems to become.

The more religious it becomes, the more the population grows.

 

There will be a tipping point.

If we start colonizing outer space, maybe we could alleviate the burden on Earth.   ;-)

Every religion could have their own space settlement. Outer Space is still the domain of God/Allah/etc.

I will say that the pressure of the population worries me a lot. However where other worries are concerned I think there has always been such in every age and there will continue to be. We are fairly resilient as species.

Quinn, You and I probably line up on a few things concerning Catholicism (which of course is anti-artificial birth control) but after reading what Steve said, I think he makes very good sense. He does admit to the harshness of his solution(s) but I would think that there should be some sort of curb. How else do you do that??? Hmmm ... I don't know. Could it be based on producing college educated, and those who grow to aid society in various families? i.e. those family lineages are allowed more than one? Is that too radical? Where are you having a beef with Steve here?

I am not censoring how you express yourself. There are times we feel strongly about something and just need to express it. I would like you and everyone else here to pinpoint statements which incites your disgust or rage if you are in attack mode. It gives the other  party a legitimate focus for rebuttal and perhaps an opportunity to learn from mistakes or misjudgments should there be any.

I like your approach to "censorship" here  on Intrepid Maricel". I wasn't meaning to attack Quinn either as much as ask where the issue was with Steve's argument. I'm more curious than defending him (and he does that well enough for himself anyway!).

Despite the majority of the population being Catholic, most of that majority would practice birth control regardless of the Cardinal's  edict. The problem isn't religion but access to birth control. Public health care is almost non existent there and condoms or pills are expensive. My ex hubby told me that many guys would wash the condoms afterward for reuse later. The majority of my relatives here and over there use birth control including myself.

 

Americans only step in to help when they have vested interest anyway.

It's probably the "it takes a village to raise a child" mentality that makes their oversight more bearable for them. It is true that many children are given to other relatives to raise. It wouldn't raise eyebrows like it would here. The extended family is sometimes indistinct from the nuclear family. My mother has raised her sister's kids for a few years when her sister needed help--falling pregnant at 19 and being forced to marry and drop our of medical school.

 

My dad was raised by his great grandma when he was younger. She lived to 115 until a bus hit her on the side of the road on her way to church-- 2 miles away on foot.

 

Should the govt decide to provide free birth-control  and info session on family planning, I think there will be very positive results. The Filipinos are NOR averse to using birth control even if the Church is against artificial means.

As to the grim future of our world........it seems that if we continue on the path we are going now that the problem of overpopulation will eventually resolve itself in a most horrific manner.  I'm glad I won't be around to see it.
