The ex had a friend with spectacularly bad taste in boyfriends, and she brought one of 'em over to our house - Once.

He sat there drinking my beer and proclaiming himself to be a "great connoisseur of music" and "a real taste-maker" amongst his friends, so the ex invited him to take a look at my record collection, one I'd been working on for the better part of twenty years - Monk / Miles / Coltrane, Bird, Dave Brubeck, British Invasion and underground prog, American psychedelia, funk and southern soul, 6o's garage bands, New York Dolls bootlegs, First Wave Noo Yawk punk, the Velvet Underground, obscure Japanese imports of little-known British blues bands, the beginnings of the American Alt-country / roots-rock revival, lots of original soundtracks, a copy of the RCA Red Label edition of "Metal Machine Music", British punk and "New Wave" before it sucked, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, hundreds of obscure b-sides, the dirtiest of chitlin-circuit 50's and 60's black comedians (Redd Foxx and the like) -

This mook spends about twenty seconds glancing at it, and comments "Your records (sic) SUCKS - You ain't got no Three Dog Night !" (This, at least ten years after they'd had their last hit single - Remember, this guy considered himself to be avant-garde and on the cutting edge of everything.)

It was like being Roger Ebert, and being insulted for not having the complete "My Mother, The Car" - On Betamax. I'd always had a rough understanding of the phrase "Consider the source", but this dirtclod really drove it home.
