Couldn't stand John Wayne. I know. It's Un-American, but I never saw a movie of his that I liked until 'The Quiet Man'. He really impressed me with his depth of character in the film. He wasn't his usual one dimensional, shoot-em-up, I'm-the-hero character. I believed he loved Maureen O'Hara's character. I was able to lose my self in the movie. Never happened again, but it happened then.

I know - other people consider it heresy not to like John Wayne, but like you, I never found him that compelling! I do have to say that Stagecoach is a pretty good movie. Wayne is green and in fact was the nobody in the cast. (Most of the big name stars didn't really like him and so John Ford had to stand up for him a bit.) It is well worth a view.

I guess the most recent one that  surprised me was one I saw on TBS this last week. Ringside Maisie. It is not anything special, but it dealt with a working class girl with a heart of gold and a boxer that doesn't like boxing. It reminded me of all the New Jersey craze.

Thought Stagecoach was a bit amateurish.......I know it is a "Classic", but.....I thought it was not all that great.

John Wayne made a LOT of bombs...oh...un-American too.  Remember that one where he was in Japan, forget the name of it...but boy did that stink.

Loved the Quiet Man and also the one where he won the Oscar....True Grit.  Also "The Shootist" was good.

Wow.....Trish, EVERYTHING you said to open this discussion....DITTO for ME!!! LOL
