I googled also and the lists are very interesting. Some I have never heard of the book or the author and I was an English Literature major in college.

How can it be that I have not even heard of 5 out of the top dozen???

To expand on that idea, every Librarian should not only "know" a list of classics, they should be required reading for them. I know lots of kids who can recite a list of author's names, but can't tell you about anything any of them wrote. My own daughter graduated high school and didn't even know who Longfellow was, (until my father and I enlightened her on the subject...) None of my grandchildren can say they've heard of any of the classic American poets and novelists, let alone any from other parts of the world.

I think it would be a good idea for each library to have a list of the classics. I think I will suggest this to our library. Surely, there are some basic lists on the internet. Will be interesting to see which books are listed. :)

I'm new to the group -- just wondered if anyone reads any of the classics??  I went to my local library recently for a list of "classic novels" and somewhat stumped the librarian.  I guess it's difficult to define "classic."

WHY???  Just make a donation to your library and write it off on your taxes :)

Just got a notice from our library that you can buy your e-books from over drive and your library will get a portion of the fee. It appears the books are more expensive than at B&N and Amazon.
