Still here! Been busy reading a smattering of stuff but am otherwise preoccupied with life matters.

I would post this on current reads discussion but it seems noone has posted since May 1 when I did... YIKES!   Where is everyone....

I just read a fantastic book that I think some of you will love as much as I did. I just pulled it off a library shelf and was so surprised since no one had recommended it to me.  Title: The Child Finder by Rene Denfeld.  I read it in less than 2 days... that compelling!

------------------------------------

Three years ago, Madison Culver disappeared when her family was choosing a Christmas tree in Oregon’s Skookum National Forest. She would be eight-years-old now—if she has survived. Desperate to find their beloved daughter, certain someone took her, the Culvers turn to Naomi, a private investigator with an uncanny talent for locating the lost and missing. Known to the police and a select group of parents as "the Child Finder," Naomi is their last hope.

Naomi’s methodical search takes her deep into the icy, mysterious forest in the Pacific Northwest, and into her own fragmented past. She understands children like Madison because once upon a time, she was a lost girl, too.

I have ordered "The Great Alone" from Amazon. It should be here any day according to Amazon tracking. I am reading yet another general history of the Civil War, now the fourth such general history called "A Savage War" by Williamson Murray and Wayne Wei-Siang Hsiah (2016, Princeton University Press). Bringing background information like - the timeline/sequence of battles, the generals involved, military rank/file, geography, and some of the various other events like the the Emancipation Proclamation - helps to make each author's perspective unique as well as reinforcing the material. There is a real pleasure in having long term study and understanding behind you in any field. This war has fascinated me since childhood. The book I am reading can be read by anybody but it is richer for those who have grounding in world history because he authors bring other wars and people to their to bear on the Civil War. This is particularly so of the Peloponnesian War and Thucydides. Most of us here are familiar with books of note like James McPherson's "Battle Cry of Freedom". I would recommend that as a first read if you are wanting a good foundational understanding.

I am reading an older book I picked up at library book sale, a spy thriller in the vein of John LeCarre.  "The Tourist" by Olen Steinhauer.  Published 2009.  Very good, especially if you like intricately told thrillers!

Well good, I am glad people are still intrigued by Alaska. Of course I am only one of the roughly 700,000 who live here and there are any number of others of you who may have friends living in this 49th state. If you want to see more photos of my immediate environment go to the photo section of my Facebook page (link listed below). Generally they consist of yard views in all seasons, gardening/landscaping, and many pictures of our three cats. Having been born and raised here in Alaska and then as an adult living and traveling outside in the south 48 as we call it, I've gotten the impression that the Last Frontier will always have such a mystique, given its geographic isolation. My mom came up here in November of 1942 looking for adventure and found it. She said she had always wanted to see Alaska and many others have followed a similar sense of life. I am guessing that feeling is alive and well. Of course the actual history of the state and corresponding settlement includes the gold rush, WWII, and oil, each of which were responsible for initiating permanent settlement.
