Tonight is rather bittersweet, my F2F Novella Group has decided to close up shop. For the last 4 1/2 years, we have met for lively discussions about little books. We have read old as well as new; classics as well as not so classic. We haven't always agreed, but we have provided food for thought. Tonight's book is Melville's Billy Budd.

I would post this on current reads discussion but it seems noone has posted since May 1 when I did... YIKES! Where is everyone....
I just read a fantastic book that I think some of you will love as much as I did. I just pulled it off a library shelf and was so surprised since no one had recommended it to me. Title: The Child Finder by Rene Denfeld. I read it in less than 2 days... that compelling!

I have ordered "The Great Alone" from Amazon. It should be here any day according to Amazon tracking. I am reading yet another general history of the Civil War, now the fourth such general history called "A Savage War" by Williamson Murray and Wayne Wei-Siang Hsiah (2016, Princeton University Press). Bringing background information like - the timeline/sequence of battles, the generals involved, military rank/file, geography, and some of the various other events like the the Emancipation Proclamation - helps to make each author's perspective unique as well as reinforcing the material. There is a real pleasure in having long term study and understanding behind you in any field. This war has fascinated me since childhood. The book I am reading can be read by anybody but it is richer for those who have grounding in world history because he authors bring other wars and people to their to bear on the Civil War. This is particularly so of the Peloponnesian War and Thucydides. Most of us here are familiar with books of note like James McPherson's "Battle Cry of Freedom". I would recommend that as a first read if you are wanting a good foundational understanding.

I am reading an older book I picked up at library book sale, a spy thriller in the vein of John LeCarre. "The Tourist" by Olen Steinhauer. Published 2009. Very good, especially if you like intricately told thrillers!
