I just finished this book I got free from Barnes & Noble. It's the first of the Jane Perry Series by Laurel Dewey. Jane is a really, really foul mouthed, alcoholic, chain smoking homicide cop. Loveable, huh? It took me a while to get into it & to find anything at all redeeming in Jane. The story line is pretty good - she has to protect a young girl who's a witness to the murder of her parents. They share a sort of psychic connection & Jane senses or sees future events. It's not Dean Koontz supernatural but she does have an ability - and she tries to deny it to herself.
I figured out the whodunnit part fairly early on & then wondered why Jane didn't/couldn't. I may read more in the series - we'll see. This one was free (hmm, are they trying to hook me into a purchase do you think?) and I don't think the library has this series. As I said....we'll see.
Maybe an 80 on the Slopok scale - just because she was such a unique character.

Her books seem to be cheap on the NOOK.Am going to have to start reading my 2 books for the book clubs here in town so may have to set them aside for a week.
I started the second book and think I ran across the name from the 1st book.Have yo go back and check) I am wondering if since she had such a good bond with the little girl will she show up in a later book,
I wondered the same thing. Keep me posted.
Just finished #2 liked it as good as the 1st. Have #3, but absolute can not start it till I finish the book club book "The Paris Wife"
Guess I'll be ordering them for my Nook. My library doesn't have them. See, this furthers my conviction that B&N offers these Free Friday books just to suck us in! It worked!
Thats probably true, but I don't mind as many of the free books I got started in a series on, I may not have seen otherwise.
Finished The Protector today. A good book, I gave it 4 1/2 stars...Kept my interest...There's just something I like about a hard drinking, cigarette smoking, foul mouthed woman...With a gun!...And a good heart, I have to add.
I just started book 3 in the series. Looking forward to more of her style.
