I just finished this book I got free from Barnes & Noble. It's the first of the Jane Perry Series by Laurel Dewey. Jane is a really, really foul mouthed, alcoholic, chain smoking homicide cop. Loveable, huh? It took me a while to get into it & to find anything at all  redeeming in Jane. The story line is pretty good - she has to protect a young girl who's a witness to the murder of her parents. They share a sort of psychic connection & Jane senses or sees future events. It's not Dean Koontz supernatural but she does have an ability - and she tries to deny it to herself.

I figured out the whodunnit part fairly early on & then wondered why Jane didn't/couldn't. I may read more in the series - we'll see. This one was free (hmm, are they trying to hook me into a purchase do you think?) and I don't think the library has this series. As I said....we'll see.

Maybe an 80 on the Slopok scale - just because she was such a unique character.

I have purchased a few of the free and low cost books from the Kindle store.  Mostly, I find you get what you pay for.  One of the guides you can use is to check the best seller list the Kindle publishes and if the book is in the top 20 or so then at least others are purchasing the same book.  You may want to check reviews by someone other than Amazon as I read some of the authors "stack' the reviews by having their friends write them.

I am currently reading a 99cent special, "Only the Strongest Survive"by Ian Fox which deals with the Stockholm syndrome.  I am almost finished and found the book quite well written and a good story.  It may not to be to some people's liking as it deals with sexuality on a very open level and the brutality is vivid.  To the good, vulgarities are not use frequently.  http://www.amazon.com/Only-the-Strongest-Survive-ebook/dp/B006AO1QKS

I find that, maybe  60%-80% of the freebies I download, I don't finish, but they are free so 40% to 20% readable for free...ain't bad.

I check out the synopisis that B&N gives on the Free Friday offerings - some are an immediate pass, but, like Slopok says, they're free so what the heck!

A lot of my books are the free fri on B&N and or the daily find. I find most I really like.Have very few that I didn't, I usually go in and read the reviews before I accept it.

Just checked my list, I read 114 books this year and have 6 that I haven't read, but have and one of them is the Protector, so will see how it sets with me.

I'll be interested in your thoughts on it Eaglewoman. Stick with it, I had a hard time getting into it but it picked up speed.

I just got started on it and was surprised to find it is set right here in my home town.I recognize all the sights.

That is always so cool to me! Love when I'm familiar with the setting.

Sounds interesting.

I was adding a few titles to my Kindle inventory and decided to spring for the 99 cents that they wanted for the Protector.  It has good reviews.  Unfortunately, my backlog is 21 Kindle pages long.  I will just add this title to the shelves full of unread books that I keep in both my Florida and Northern Kentucky homes.  I don't bother to inventory them any more but I must have 500 unread books or better.  I also have an excellent local library in Northern KY and a well stocked library/exchange at my retirement community in Florida that supplies me with many titles.  So many books; so little time!

Just finished it, really liked it.Wavered between her boss and her partner all thry the book. They did a good job of keeping it till the end. I just ordered 2 &3 on my NOOk, it appears there are 15 in the series.

Good to see your thoughts on this Eaglewoman. You've swayed me to try another one. She is truly a unique female character - at least I've not ready anything that had such a self-destructive female lead.
