I've always enjoyed a good collection of short stories as you can pick 'em up and put 'em down. George Saunders has released a new collection Tenth of December that looks quite promising.  It's on my reserve list.

I have a collection of short stories and try to read one a month:

Here are some titles from my shelf library:

"Maps in the Mirror," The Short Fiction of Orson Scott Card

"The Best American Non-Required Reading," Dave Eggers, Editor

"High Tide in Tucson," Barbara Kingsolver

"Legends," (Short novels by famous writers), Robert Silverberg, Editor

"Heat," Joyce Carol Oates

"Hot Night in the City," Trevanian

"Isobars," Janette Turner Hospital (Australian fiction)

I also have a number of short story collections on my KIndle from various authors that I read from time to time.  Kindle has also put together a collection of "Singles," short stories or mini-novels by some top authors.  I have read a number of them.  I  have a set of three short stories by Jodi Picoult.

I find that after I finish an especially long novel, the change of pace of a short story hits the spot.

Yes, I remember that many of the original BOOKOHOLICS group read OLIVE KITTERIDGE back when we were part of eons.  Excellent read!!!!  Thanks for mentioning the book.  It's worth reading a second time!

Callie, yes, we did discuss some book titles on eons and occasionally had a guest author to chat with us, i.e. Louise Penny. Unfortunately, the eons format is no longer available so we gather where we can to talk books.  So glad you've joined us! Any suggestions you have are welcome. The only thing we discourage is self promotion/marketing by authors and discussing author member's books.

I'm currently reading The Best American Short Stories of 2012 as edited by Geraldine Brooks.  Life has been a bit hectic since my 2-week vacation in January (first time trip to Hawaii as well as first vacation in 3 years), surgery on my Sweeney's leg (how does a Shih Tzu tear his ACL?  very expensive w/o pet insurance), Osher classes (would you believe a class on the Vatican, developed long before Pope Benedict resigned), and mentoring duties for the new class of docents.  I don't usually read short stories, but with my current schedule, they fit the bill.
